BBC World Service - Science In Action, How science got here, and where next
As anti-science leaves research reeling, does evidence-based policy have a future?
It's the end of the road for BBC Science in Action. But science itself is facing growing roadblocks. For this terminal edition of SinA I'm joined by @naomioreskes.bsky.social @drdebhoury.bsky.social @michaelemann.bsky.social & @angierasmussen.bsky.social for where now?

A personal message from 2022 chemistry laureate Carolyn Bertozzi to all young researchers on why to aspire to a career in science:
โI would want to share with them how a life in science is incredibly rewarding. It is rewarding because it is creative. You are discovering knowledge and gifting that to humanity for all of posterity. Once you learn something no one can take that away. It is not an object. It is an intellectual currency that will be shared throughout the generations. And you created that. It has a permanence that ironically a physical object doesnโt have. You can paint a painting, but eventually it will fade. But knowledge doesnโt fade. Knowledge stays with us forever and it becomes the foundation for the next generations.โ
A motivating quote from @carolynbertozzi.bskyverified.social:
โโฆYou are discovering knowledge and gifting that to humanity for all of posterity. Once you learn something no one can take that away. It is not an object. It is an intellectual currency that will be shared throughout the generationsโฆโ

Atul Butte died yesterday.
The world lost a giant.
A big bear of a man.
With a huge smile.
With love for everyone.
With energy that could power a room.
I loved everything about Atul.
I loved how he was always happy.
I loved how excited he was about science and helping people.

It is far easier to rattle of a list of things wrong with the current system than to replace it with something better. I'm old enough to have sat in a room > 20 years ago, listening to @mbeisen.bsky.social explaining, after his scientific seminar, how open access was THE thing that was going to 1/n
