The economic benefits to having robust public schools, the importance of public education to democracy, and education as part of realizing individual human potential are not mutually exclusive outcomes.
School voucher systems wall these purposes off from each other.

When I say vouchers are subject to the same gravity of politics and policy as anything else, this is an example of what I mean.
Vouchers are no magical mystery cure-all.
Theyโre just garden-variety bad policy.
And bad policy creates bad incentives.

As I say in The Privateers: The evidence against voucher schemes isnโt one-sided, but itโs as one sided as social science gets.
Folks sharing admittedly bad international test scores data while pressing publicly funded private schools arenโt offering a serious solution.

One lesson the voucher lobby has learned: voter persuasion doesnโt work for them.
Their strategy is now brute legislative and judicial force.

No-Limit Vouchers Are Blowing Up Arizonaโs Budget. This Woman Is Leading the Way.
Conservative parents seeking "educational freedom" have found a taxpayer-supported way to opt out of public schools. And other states want to imitate it.
Must-read @politico.com on the state players behind and opposing AZโs voucher scheme. Key points:
*Correctly locates DeVos and Koch as the big national drivers of state-specific schemes (see my book The Privateers for more detail)
