Easy, alien invasion. They aren't grey & don't have bulbous heads as it turns out. They're more like reeeeally skinny serpents, with hooked heads, in colours ranging from white to gold. Far prettier than we've ever imagined but I would think absolutely deadly when they latch onto you with the hook.

I do *exactly* the same thing - another reason my cupboards & the overflow, my boot, are chockers. I know it's a scam designed to sell more but on things like laundry detergent you can save $10 by buying 2. They can only do it bc they're raking in the profits but I can't afford to pay x2.
