Risks

I think all of my characters take a risk at some point, but the one most notorious for doing so (and getting himself in trouble) is Alex in The Caein Legacy. It's a good thing he has an older brother nearby to save him most of the time... πŸ˜…

Do your characters believe in luck or fate?

Some believe in luck (notably Owen from Serpentus, and his running dialogue with the goddess of chance)

But I have a couple (unpublished) that believe in fate. Helene, from Oracle, and Zel from the Fontayne Co.

Concentrated doses of cruelty, discomfort, and sorrow, written as well as one would expect, whilst I have no doubt @ronaldmalfi.bsky.social can handle 1000 pages, We Should Have Left Well Enough Alone, goes to show he is equally capable of making you just as uneasy in 10.

Dear K. R. R. Lockhaven,

Writing an Epic Fantasy novel like The Grimoire, the Gods, and the Girl takes real intention, patience, and the courage to expand a world while deepening its stakes. That kind of layered storytelling never happens by accident, and it speaks to the level of commitment behind your work.

From what I have seen, you come across as a very intentional author, especially in the way The Grimoire, the Gods, and the Girl leans into themes of political upheaval, loyalty, and the pursuit of deeper magical knowledge. The looming civil war within the League of Islands, the capture of the Marauder King, and Azure’s journey across the vast sea to uncover the true nature of magic all create a narrative that balances adventure with meaningful character growth. Not every writer is willing to expand both the physical map and the emotional landscape of a series at the same time, and it genuinely stands out.

Yesterday, I had an offer for my epic fantasy "packed with magic," Wraith & the Revolution.

Today, l got this. I am not KRR Lockhaven (though Mrs. Covington's was a great cozy fantasy by that author and I recommend checking out.)

Lies or Rumors

In The Caein Legacy, Claire spreads some vicious rumors about Andrew after she leaves him. She's angry; she married him to become queen, but Andrew was never heir to the throne... When she finds out, her wrath is brutal. 😬

Characters' guilty pleasures

For Jal'den, it's honey cakes. He LOVES them (from The Ballad of Alchemy & Steel)

With Andrew, it's flying just for fun. He doesn't get to do that very often (from The Caein Legacy)

An emotionally-charged, action-packed debut that delivers a very entertaining tale with a complex magic system and solid world-building in a fairly small package (compared to the doorstoppers).
