Yesterday, we added the bugs. Today, we added the ability to squash them.
As an added bonus, we've improved the Dash mechanic's animations to include a trailing ghost that disappears.

Today we've implemented a new dash mechanic to the game, complete with sound effects, a charge system, and a pickup that speeds up the recharge process.

Hurricane prep and watching the storm stressfully ate up dev time the last couple of days, but weβll have more Bug Squashers updates starting tomorrow!
Thankfully, we were largely ignored by the storm. The team nearly lost everything in 2022 with Ian, so these are always nervy times for us.
Today we kick off new Daily Updates series for Bug Squashers, coming in early 2025 to the NES!
In our first update, we look at our animation tests for the Idle, Walking, and Jumping animations. For more on Bug Squashers, check out our YouTube channel for full devlogs, soundtrack previews, and more!

So...yeah. This didn't exactly work well with her work schedule and Alexis had to bail pretty fast for a variety of reasons.
On the bright side, we're learning a TON about Godot through an online course, and will soon be back to work on Bug Squashers (video on that very soon).
Helping speed things along is the use of an asset pack from Itch. We donβt have an in-house artist (yet), and with the short window, relying on freelancers wasnβt feasible.
Taking art out of the equation has made this task a lot less daunting.
The Concept (continued):
If her curse overtakes her, she transforms into a demon and burns from within before dying.
The player must race against the curse to cure themselves before the Infernal Storm overtakes them.
The Concept:
The prompt is βCalm before the storm,β and weβre pulling this internally.
Our heroine is cursed. On the night of the Blood Moon, she must traverse a haunted castle and collect 4 relics to cure her curse. If she takes damage or attacks an enemy, her curse worsens.
Brackeyβs Game Jam Updates π§΅- Day 1
Itβs been a slow day. Alexis has been working through the Brackeyβs Godot tutorial, but due to a very poorly timed illness, sheβs low on energy.
Still, she has a player moving, jumping, and animating already, so we have SOME progress!
Starting our first Game Jam today!
Weβve never done one of these, and we donβt know a thing about Godot, but we wanted a game dev challenge.

Bug Squashers isnβt even close to done yet, but holding the physical cartridge for the first time was an incredibly surreal and magical feeling.

As we plan on an eventual physical release, we figured weβd do it with style. This is just a test run, but weβre so excited about how it turned out π
