It’s the way they talk about how fast they all grow up, not realizing there’s a boy over there whom the world threw heart first into the ocean and told him that drowning is also part of living, and how he came to be with water in his lungs, part shadow, all shadow, some days more, others less, wondering how sharks were left swimming in the streets, and how there are days he feels the water drying up, leaving him to breathe fire and misery instead. It hurts.

And he thinks that maybe everything burns, was always burning, each moment simply waiting for another phoenix to rise so that someone somewhere down the line can say it all had meaning in the end. It still hurts.

But he reaches for the stars, they all do down here, and he still can’t forget the way the moon made magic of his life and how the words leapt off the pages, pulling him into places he never thought he could go, just like that name bigger than any of his dreams had ever been. He was once sunlight on midnight’s wings, and there had been dirt on his feet and hunger in his stomach, but there stood another door, shattered glass mostly. But open is open, you know. You see the streets had taught him that, a different lesson from the world and her ocean, and you took opportunities before they crowded around your grave and wept for all you’d never been. He’d never been much.

Oh, but he believed it for a moment, maybe a little more. Time gets funny when memory starts talking, but he remembers the water in his chest and the heaviness of trying to breath (again), not quite as bad as the knowing, how all things move, keep moving, and there are some firebirds better left fizzling out in the ashes. More potential for the burying. He could have been everything. They cry over that, too, he’s realized. That’s what some of them say, anyway. Dead is dead, but you knew that, right? He’s still got a heart beating in his chest, though.
