Which academic search systems are suitable for systematic reviews or meta‐analyses? Evaluating retrieval qualities of Google Scholar, PubMed, and 26 other resources Rigorous evidence identification is essential for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (evidence syntheses) because the sample selection of relevant studies determines a review's outcome, validity, a...

In the past, we often found that search FAQs at various databases do not reliably display search functionality. We encourage researchers, especially those doing systematic searches, to be aware of search functionality limitations to avoid database biases.

ResearchGate - Search Smart - The best academic databases We started ResearchGate in 2008 to address the problems we saw in the way science is created and shared. Our mission is to connect the world of science and make research open to all. The 20 million researchers in our community come from diverse sectors in over 190 countries, and use ResearchGate to connect, collaborate, and share their work.

While our data shows that @ResearchGate is second-best in forward citation coverage, their search and export capabilities are very limited. Details:Most people love it as a social media tool, and indeed it should be used that way rather than for search.

Well, we just added @ResearchGate and validated these functionalities. Turns out that none of them work reliably, unfortunately: Boolean search results do not add up, showing inadequate results, and neither exact searches with "", nor nested searches with () seem to work.

Overton - Policy Documents - Search Smart - The best academic databases Our flagship database allows users to discover more than 13 million policy documents and grey literature and their links to each other, to academic papers and to relevant people and topics. Coupled with Overton Engage – a platform to connect experts with decision makers – we’re the leading tool to understand and influence policy.

Overton covers formats from white papers to national guidelines, making it interesting for research impact assessment. It works well for systematic keyword searching and backward citation searching - also due to generous export options.

Yet, there are still some caveats to @OpenAlex, particularly for systematic reviewers: it's still missing field codes, backward citations, and our tests show that Boolean searches aren't exact yet. We are excited to see how the system evolves over the next months.

Upon popular request we now support filtering based on database type!
E.g. you can compare all 'journal platforms' operated by publishers and see differences in open access coverage (image). Or you can limit to databases by aggregators (ProQuest, Web of Science, Ebsco, Ovid) etc.
