To sum up- yes, most furries usually lack the basic social skills and situational awareness to see a fursuit at a protest and understand why they shouldn't do it, too. Instead of fear-mongering/demonizing, let's use this opportunity to educate how to safely protest. Something even non-furries need!

"Tear gas is a bitch and will ruin your suit". My sister in satan- it is a rug. It is not more important than the person wearing it. If the person wearing it has agreed that it's worth risking for whatever the protest is about, then that decision is nunya business.

"It's extra flammable!" No. Wrong. Very wrong. Most faux furs melt long before they combust. The melting plastic against your skin and giving off fumes is more of a problem than fire compared to normal clothes. But if ppl are getting ignited, then the suit isn't the primary danger of the situation.

"It's clothing uniquely tied to you". Yes. You own the thing. That doesn't mean _you_ were wearing it. Who knows who's under there. Direct any claims or questions about the wearing of your property to your lawyer. Note my careful wording in my OP.

So it's a use of privilege to do it. And to Tofte's point, you have an opportunity to use that privilege. To risk an expensive, one-of-a-kind rug to show support for something you believe in. Just don't be stupid, know the risk, your privilege, have a robust sssn. And now for some silly responses:

The event's risk isn't the problem for most. It's the lack of sssn even w/o a suit. Know your rights? Your lawyer's # memorized? Burner phone? Going w/ multiple friends? Ppl at home keeping tabs on your status? And if you're not a cis white dude, you've got a whole other set of calculations to make.

But you won't know unless you're actually active locally. Media wants you think that _all_ protests are dangerous. That you will always conflict with counter-protesters and police violence. That's not true. So go to a few locally to see what your area is like (out of suit, ofc). You'll be surprised.

And that's what I want to emphasize. For no-kings/indivisible "protests", there are 1000's of events going on in the US, and a _vast majority_ of them are good to suit at (with a sssn). At a small city in a blue-ish area, it's gonna be mostly lib moms and queer teens. A silly suit fits in perfectly.

Sorry for annoying nuance, but while most ppl w/ a fursuit shouldn't have it worn at a protest, there is still space for it to happen and be a good thing. You need a sufficient social safety net (sssn) and a low-enough-risk event. The former is what disqualifies most furries, not the latter.
