Yeah Ray Charles is our legacy test ZIM file. For some reason the head dev does not want us to use anything else.

Would that be Wikipedia on demand? wp1.openzim.org
There's an upper limit at 30k articles per selection but yeah, basically it will allow you to build your own subset.
Or simply grab mwoffliner from our repo and do whatever.
You can totally download Kiwix on a flash drive along with some of these resources. And it's free!

Hey great post, but at the end we'd also appreciate a nudge to support Kiwix as well as Wikipedia (we're also not-for-profit) π₯°

It's free software so by all means go for it! (donations to help sustain the project are welcome, though)
Just keep us posted on your overall numbers every once in a while, so we can get an idea of where needs are.
Well, that's nice - thank youπ₯°

Not sure it is good stewardship but we've spent the last 18 months frantically trying to fix, then rewrite almost entirely our scraper π
Things should be a lot smoother now and we expect returning to a more reasonable update schedule βοΈ
An abstract digital illustration promoting the concept of "Building a Free Internet of the Future." The image features stylised, colorful geometric and organic shapes forming a cityscape at the bottom, with a prominent central screen displaying artwork of red and yellow circular patterns over a diamond background. The text "BUILDING A FREE INTERNET OF THE FUTURE" appears in minimalist font on the left side of the image.
Free and open source software project #Kiwix has provided access to vital information in diverse places, including in isolated communities.

@hankgreen.bsky.social can you please confirm your channel can be shared and distributed?
For context Kiwix is a non-profit sharing highly-compressed offline copies of websites (e.g. Wikipedia) for people without internet access (prisons, camps, etc.).
Not that we know, but if it it Debian-based then this should be manageable.

google kiwix, have fun.
(if you have a nas, you may be able to install kiwix directly onto it!)
We did have a few Government websites zim files and we stopped updating them in January.
But there's a lot of data that simply can't be zimmed up, though there are some efforts to download and hoard as much as possible
Well we just released our own hotspot hardware, so people will now be able to get them delivered to their door *and* support a non-profit.

(part of our funding comes from the Wikimedia Foundation and they have one of them on our board, but we are independent)
We're non profit, so yes donations are always welcome!

Coffee's great too. Warm, caffeine-laced coffee. Hmmm.
Yeah well we're on it!
Mediawiki offline has just been released, we've started testing and smaller wikis are already back. If all goes well we're looking at a May-June return to normalcy.
If you are talking about the miraheze wiki, it looks like the site is under a CC license - you could simply ask to have it added to the Kiwix library github.com/openzim/zim-...

Instead of doomscrolling, I've taken to reading random little factoids and articles instead through kiwix. Recommended if you feel like browing the hellslab but want less stress in your life.
