@hankgreen.bsky.social can you please confirm your channel can be shared and distributed?

For context Kiwix is a non-profit sharing highly-compressed offline copies of websites (e.g. Wikipedia) for people without internet access (prisons, camps, etc.).

Not that we know, but if it it Debian-based then this should be manageable.

We did have a few Government websites zim files and we stopped updating them in January.

But there's a lot of data that simply can't be zimmed up, though there are some efforts to download and hoard as much as possible

Yeah well we're on it!
Mediawiki offline has just been released, we've started testing and smaller wikis are already back. If all goes well we're looking at a May-June return to normalcy.

If you are talking about the miraheze wiki, it looks like the site is under a CC license - you could simply ask to have it added to the Kiwix library github.com/openzim/zim-...

Instead of doomscrolling, I've taken to reading random little factoids and articles instead through kiwix. Recommended if you feel like browing the hellslab but want less stress in your life.

Hey ! Seeing what's happening to science and knowledge these past few weeks, I just published a step by step guide to deploy an offline wikipedia (among other sites) with docker. It's right here: dev.to/matthieusb/s...

It's using an awesome project called kiwix: kiwix.org/en

The 20GB dataset is a raw dump, i.e. not human-readable.
The ZIM file currently is the highest compression available for direct use by us mere mortals.

13.03.2025 08:51 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

The 20GB thing is for raw data (and no images). A highly compressed yet human-readable download would be in the 50GB range (102GB with images).

Still fits on a medium-range phone, nowadays.

So we looked into it (as well as arXiv), and it was not a trival endeavour, sadly.

Wish we'd had more time / resources though.
