It would have been my Dad's 87th birthday today. I always take today off. I've not been able to celebrate his birthday with him in eleven years. It feels so unfair. Spent the day with Mum. Needed it.

Inscribed on the bottom. In Japan, the sparrow is regarded as an auspicious symbol of prosperity and abundance. The Fukura susume (suzume) was particularly popular in the late Edo period from the 1780s onwards. “Fukura” means “to expand” and paired with the auspicious sparrow has the overall meaning of "prosperity will expand."
