I get back from holiday and this beautiful track by Big Thief and Laraaji is finally in public domain. Grandmother, from what I think is the best Big Thief album by a long way, Double Infinity.

the best music was made between like 1890 and 2057 and I won't be convinced otherwise

Good record.

Probably rock-folk more than folk-rock I suppose.

Yeah. Great first fortnight. The fact that a tired (ill?) Pog was still the best rider, but a more defensive one, muted the excitement in week three.

Also does Fisherman’s Blues count as UK folk-rock given the nationalities of at least part of the band?

Brilliant thread. I’d probably go for No Roses, but these also deserve a mention and I couldn’t see them in there: Barry Dransfield and Dando Shaft self-titleds, plus - maybe a stretch but worth a go - the first three Ronnie Lane/Slim Chance records.

Yeah I can imagine my dad would feel the same about Trent Bridge now. And for all the talk about how the players thrive on the atmosphere, I’m sure they must be annoyed and distracted by thousands of people completely ignoring the game for five hours like they’ve done today.

Man I love test cricket but I think the party stand at Old Trafford might be my idea of hell on earth.

Yep it's economic viability for freelance writers too. But all this is why we try and put the artists' stories and intentions at the forefront of what we do in MOJO, not the writers'. I still think you need to show that level of work and engagement to make a monthly mag worth people's money.

I think this dovetails into the economic viability in depleted newsrooms of Comment over Reporting (unless you're paying insane amounts to ex-PMs and star columnists to churn it out, of course). It's a business model which has had (possibly) unintended consequences.

Loved this when I saw it at a Carrington exhibition a few months ago.

I think the same might be true about Fred Wright, unfortunately, though obviously he seems to have a much better relationship with the press than Simmons.

Not just his politics that make him unlikeable then. Simmons also strikes me as one of those riders who does a lot of very showy, visible work - and in fairness very useful work for Milan this Tour - without always much tangible tactical gain.

This. The only thing that remotely compares for me is a cycling Grand Tour. But as in music, so in sport: I basically just like things that go on for a very long time.

The idea that Ben Stokes has ever been the world's best all-rounder in an era where this guy has played - and been the world's best fielder too - is risible.

This is like the opposite of me really enjoying The Archers until I moved out of London and suddenly found it unlistenable.
