Slower arm speed may be why older people fall more easily after a slip Younger people move their arms more quickly than their older counterparts when they slip, helping them to regain their balance and prevent a fall

Had the pleasure of working with James Woodford at the publisher New Scientist and our work was designated as the lead article! It’s about how older adults may be at risk of falling from a slip from decreased arm movements! www.newscientist.com/article/2409...

View of Strength in Arms

How can we enhance #physicaltherapy fall prevention protocols? This paper describes enhancing programs for #olderadults by adding cost-effective arm #training. What are your thoughts on integrating arm strengthening protocols? Please share your thoughts.

Young adults accelerate their arms significantly faster and earlier than old adults resulting in imp... bioRxiv - the preprint server for biology, operated by Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, a research and educational institution

New #biomechanics preprint! Younger adults accelerated their arms quicker than older adults during a #slip incident. This resulted in YA reducing CoM by 2+ in compared to OA. Lastly, YA reached peak arm abd 310ms prior to OA. Should we #train the arms? www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

MDPI’s ~8x special issues over regular issues is mind boggling. How is that special when it’s so many and so frequent? It’s like saying β€œlimited edition car” when 90% of the cars sold are limited…

This was an interesting 🧡on twitter (I refuse to call it X) on data showing the increase in publications by publishers between 2016-2022. Increases in publications are disproportionate to increase in scientists. Also shows certain publishers decrease review time.

I wish I had done preprints. I hope to submit my first one within a few months. The potential for early feedback and expedition of scientific dissemination just seems like such a win-win.

We reported a month ago that older adults accelerate their arms significantly slower than younger adults when responding to an overground slip incident. Can older adults’ arm responses be trained to improve their stability when experiencing a slip? #biomechanics #neurophysiology #neuro #train

AZ Fall Prevention – Preventing falls in Arizona

Caregivers in AZ were told to not pick up adults who had fallen on the ground. The AZ Fall Prevention Coalition got a senate bill AZ SB1373 passed to get caregivers to people up. We designed the training which can be found at azfallprevention.com for caregivers in AZ. #fallspreventionweek

Only a subset of my papers fit there, but my favorite journals that publish biomechanics are Journal of the Royal Society Interface & Journal of Experimental Biology. We've also had good experiences with a couple of the IEEE Transactions on … journals. None of these only focus on biomechanics though

J. Experimental Biology welcomes papers that combine experiment & modeling, & we publish a lot of biomechanics. The work must provide insight into mechanisms that are broadly relevant in a comparative/evolutionary context even if the specific work focuses on humans. πŸ§ͺ #biomechsky

What are your favourite biomechanics journals? Looking for something that would fit an experimental+modelling paper. I usually go with JBME (12k word limit and no $$), but I'd like to mix it up. Where do you like to submit? #biomechsky #academicsky

I shamelessly solicited BlueSky invite so that I could tell y'all that my department is hiring a TT AP in IR conflict this year.

We're just a bunch of kind nerds on the plains who care about both research and teaching.

Posting below. I'm not on the committee but happy to encourage applications!
