Quasimodo, meanwhile, had his hand over his mouth, eyes wide with childlike concern.

“It sings,” he whispered, as though afraid to disturb it. “A tiny bell without a tower.”

then down to the glowing contraption that seemed to command everyone’s attention.

“What… what is it doing?” he asked, voice gravelly yet tinged with wonder. He took a cautious step closer, tilting his head as the toaster clicked softly.

From the dim corner of the room came a shuffling sound—heavy, uneven footsteps that creaked the old floorboards.

Quasimodo hesitated in the doorway, broad shoulders hunched, one hand clutching the frame for balance. His wide, curious eyes flicked from Erik to Yeshua,

“Both?”

“I… Uhm.. is-.. is quiet?”

“Ages!! Ages and ages and ages!”

He hadn't seen him in a long time.

“I.. M-missed you!!”

“I-I d-on’t think I’ll be a Saint”, he mumbled. “I.. I like my head.”

“‘Mm sorry your head got cut off.. it c-an’t h’v been fun. But, but now you’re Saint!

Being Saint must be fun!

Do you get to be Saint if you’re nice to Jesus? Or is it ‘cause your head got cut off?”

The hunchback trailed off to mull over the idea.

He paused for a moment, and squinted up at the panes.

Quasimodo settled carefully in front of the brightly coloured window depicting the story of Saint Aphrodisius. He still couldn’t quite pronounce the name, but it had become one of his favourite stories.

In a way, it reminded him of his own; a kind soul offering sanctuary,

All reasons his master had banished him to his duties in the towers - duties which had all but deafened the young man over the years. Such was the poor wretch who called the cathedral ‘home’ - it was his universe.

his spine appeared both hunched and almost sigmoidally twisted, his head apparently sitting on his hunched, misshapen shoulders. His face itself was also deformed. A large growth almost entirely covered his left eye, and his lips twisted into a lopsided attempt at a smile.

The internal debate raged for a few moments before he staggered out from his hiding place, into the open to gawp at Notre Dame’s famed Rose Window. His deformities caused him to limp heavily, one leg being shorter than the other;
