Sea-ice perturbation and mass starvation of Thick-billed Murres in the Northwest Atlantic Ocean Mass mortality among seabirds has been associated with ocean heatwaves. Though less commonly reported, cold water events can also be devastating. During spring 2022, thousands of Thick-billed Murres (...

🌊 What is the Meridional Overturning Circulation
and why is it important?

The Meridional Overturning Circulation (#MOC) – critical for transporting heat, carbon, oxygen and nutrients across the globe – is weakening under climate change.

We have a new paper in Science Advances on seasonal movements of the sub-Arctic seafloor. Using sub-annual bathymetry, porewater data, and moored sensors, we observed the seabed expanding and contracting through freeze–thaw cycles, forming seasonal frost blisters.

Humans will always have oxygen to breathe, but we can’t say the same for ocean life We are not at risk of running out of oxygen due to climate change, but ocean creatures are – and that will harm the whole planet.

This false assertion about the ocean producing 50% of the oxygen we breathe is so widespread that @jpgattuso.bsky.social @bopplaurent.bsky.social and others have written about it here.
