Exalted Leader likes to declare the occasional Exalted Leader Day Holiday, or change a town name to Exalted Leaderville and award himself a few medals.

"She called Nlubglub β€˜him’ instead of β€˜them,’ and Nlubglub called her mother a three-legged space worm and said she hadn’t changed socks in seven Plutonian years. Then Nlubglub chased her back to her ship, and she flew over to Jupiter and started shooting.”

Great book. Really captures the era: Minneapolis early in the covid pandemic, when no one was sure what was safe - and then the George Floyd murder and the uprising that followed.

Minneapolis has been Ground Zero lately, and Erdrich brings it to life.

I don't always "trust" happy endings - it's hard to write them convincingly. I admire writers who can write a happy ending without seeming contrived. In my "serious" writing, I tend toward the bittersweet, but in comedy I give it a mostly-happy ending.

"The Space-Faring Moron’s Guide to Common Science Fiction Plot Devices" looked well-thumbed. I pulled it down and scanned the introduction.

I was overwhelmed: by the warmth of his hands on my face, by the way the music went silent, by the metallic smell of his hair. And, oh yeah, by the kiss. I felt like the world was on fire. And I smelled smoke.

Why did I smell smoke?
