Taken together, this has created a cultural firestorm fuelled by lies.

The British public is being manipulated into blaming migrants and refugees. Trust in our political and justice systems is being eroded.

Meanwhile, the media feeds this hysteria by giving hugely disproportionate airtime to debates on people seeking asylum here – despite only accounting for 0.16% of the British population.

Politicians cherry pick statistics, deliberately share images that foster the sense of a country under siege, and even spread outright lies about the reality of being a migrant in the UK.

Faster, fairer routes to settlement are essential.

A functioning asylum system doesn’t operate by guest list, but offers people seeking sanctuary the right to travel to the UK safely, have their claims processed quickly and gives them the chance to move on with their lives.

Safe routes for some shouldn't come at the expense of others. 3/3

Instead of trying to bring about unity and a shift in attitudes, the government is yet again resorting to deterrence policies. The past decade has shown us they don't work. 2/3
