Official petition to the ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡บ govt: make part-time PhD students' stipends tax-exempt!
www.aph.gov.au/e-petitions/...

Stipends are low but at least tax-exempt. Unless they go part time, then it becomes taxable. This disproportionately affects PhD students w/ care duties, health issues, young children..

Can large language models stand in for human participants?
Many social scientists seem to think so, and are already using "silicon samples" in research.

One problem: depending on the analytic decisions made, you can basically get these samples to show any effect you want.

Delegation to artificial intelligence can increase dishonest behaviour - Nature People cheat more when they delegateย tasks to artificial intelligence, and large language models are more likely than humans to comply with unethical instructionsโ€”a risk that can be minimized by introducing prohibitive, task-specific guardrails.

Yep, I agree on evaluation. Also, execution. Ideas are cheap, testing them is not.

But if everyone starts using these tools to brainstorm ideas, studies will all start focussing on the same problems and we lose diversity. To be honest, I don't find that coming up with ideas is the bottleneck in research.

I am a senior PC. I found them so detailed and focused on technical content to be not at all helpful. The ones I could understand found some real technical issues that could be helpful for authors. My suggestion to AAAI was to have an earlier pre-deadline to provide this feedback before submission

ARC says theyโ€™ll announced Discovery Indigenous outcomes tomorrow.

Recently, announcements have been made around 11am (Canberra time). But even more recently ARCโ€™s comms have been at weird hours, so weโ€™ll see what happens.
