Official petition to the ๐ฆ๐บ govt: make part-time PhD students' stipends tax-exempt!
www.aph.gov.au/e-petitions/...
Stipends are low but at least tax-exempt. Unless they go part time, then it becomes taxable. This disproportionately affects PhD students w/ care duties, health issues, young children..

The threat of analytic flexibility in using large language models to simulate human data: A call to attention
Social scientists are now using large language models to create "silicon samples" - synthetic datasets intended to stand in for human respondents, aimed at revolutionising human subjects research. How...
Can large language models stand in for human participants?
Many social scientists seem to think so, and are already using "silicon samples" in research.
One problem: depending on the analytic decisions made, you can basically get these samples to show any effect you want.

Yep, I agree on evaluation. Also, execution. Ideas are cheap, testing them is not.
16.09.2025 23:42 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0
But if everyone starts using these tools to brainstorm ideas, studies will all start focussing on the same problems and we lose diversity. To be honest, I don't find that coming up with ideas is the bottleneck in research.

I am a senior PC. I found them so detailed and focused on technical content to be not at all helpful. The ones I could understand found some real technical issues that could be helpful for authors. My suggestion to AAAI was to have an earlier pre-deadline to provide this feedback before submission
