Looking at Google Maps, I think it must have been Colllingtree Park Golf Club, assuming it extends as far as the Towcester Road. Of course, things may have changed a bit since 1980. I camped on one of the tees, and was gone by six in the morning.

I once camped on a golf course on the edge of Northampton, during a failed attempt to hitchhike from the Peak District to Oxford. Never been to the city itself.
