Former FBI informant Alexander Smirnov pleaded guilty today to lying about a phony bribery scheme involving Joe Biden and his son Hunter that was central to congressional Republicans’ impeachment inquiry into the president. He entered his plea to a felony charge in connection with the bogus story.

Slovak President Peter Pellegrini suggested that Ukraine might have to make territorial concessions for peace. In response, Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Georgiy Tykhyi reminded that the last time Slovak lands were given up for peace, it didn’t end well.

THIS IS HOW ONE FAMILY EATS ON $12.50 A WEEK

(Main article)
If all American housewives had the spunk and ingenuity of the woman on this page β€” Mrs. Hamilton Williams of Atlanta, Ga. β€” inflation would be less of a swear word. Mrs. Williams, wife of a high school teacher, allows herself $12.50 a week to buy all her groceries except milk. On this she manages to feed herself, her husband, her 4-year-old twins, and even the family cat. The job takes considerable doing. Mrs. Williams is an avid student of grocery ads & shop windows. She limits herself to one shopping expedition a week, at which she weighs every penny against the family's full week appetite. She serves no meat at lunch and limits her evening entrees to such items as hamburger, meat loaf, and chili. Yet she manages to provide two desserts weekly and such frills as cookies for a party. When she described her budget in the Atlanta Journal recently, less enterprising housewives sent in letters of disbelief and the city's CIO got to work on an official denial that any family could eat so cheaply. But Mrs. Williams, the 1947 heroine of the Battle of the Budget, carried merrily on.

Photo 1: behind the shoulder shot of Mrs. Williams with newspapers spread out in front of her. "Mrs. Williams starts with a search through grocery advertisements."

Photo 2: the photo from the original Twitter post. A shot from above of her next to a laid out selection of groceries. "She proudly displays the result of one of her weekly trips to the store: $12.50 worth of purchases will feed her family of four the next seven days. The wrapped packages in the foreground contain the cheapest available cuts of meat."

Photo 3: Mrs. Williams looks at a storefront advertising sale items. "Mrs. Williams scans shop window for bargains"

Photo 4: Decorating cookies. "Cookie-baking for a Parent-Teacher Association party at the twins' school also comes out of the budget."

It gets even funnier: the article it's from ["High Prices", Life Magazine, Nov. 10, 1947] is on post-war inflation & how much less the same amount buys compared to 1939.

She's presented as an example of someone who counts every penny & makes sacrifices in order to have a below-average grocery bill.
