With Washington Post Local diminished, other news sites step up their D.C. coverage The 51st, City Cast, and The Baltimore Banner are among the outlets to announce expansions of Washington, D.C. metro area coverage since the Post layoffs.

Will be interesting to watch which organizations can pull this off.

My grandpa was too young for WWI but lied about his age joining Merchant Marines. Then returned trying to go to college but run out of town by Klan. He became prosecutor. My other grandad, joined IU’s ROTC to skip some of WWII but shipped to Europe luckily staying in Scotland. Later became a judge.

Personal news update: I'm delighted to announce that as of today, I am an actual Bluesky employee! I'll be working to welcome indie media and local govt to Bskyβ€”and supporting those already here.

I'll always want to hear your thoughts on how we can make Bsky the sort of social media we all want!

Getting to Know the Small Business Administration's Disaster Assistance Programs An introduction to a lesser-known but vital resource for post-disaster recovery

I wrote a small introduction to the SBA’s disaster loan programs, one of the largest sources of federal recovery funds but also less visible to researchers. It includes some new interactive data assets to explore SBA data (such as it is): open.substack.com/pub/andrewru...

Electric bills keep rising β€” and solar can help lower costs. But connecting panels in DC can take 2+ months and sometimes comes with surprise charges of $20K or more.

The GRID Act from CM Charles Allen aims to fix the process. ⬇️

This prioritizes those DOT actions supporting the proposed land use controls for funding and implementation under the State Transportation Improvement Program while requiring the state to implement the action, such as zoning and/or parking modifications happen.

This is why states/local jurisdictions can use the land use transportation control measure that includes zoning, housing in proximity to activity centers, infill development, and more!

President’s Day Un-Fun Fact:
Until 1964, the District had *no* vote at all in Presidential elections. The White House was here in DC. The President was here in DC. But DC could not vote for the President. Until 1964. 1964!
