And they have the LOVELY side effect of making the teammates that have to work with the character later far less likely to chase you around the building with pitchforks 🤣

I also do restrictions based on the media the character is anticipated to appear in.

If they're for comics or animation, they can't have the same texture detail as a 3D character

If they're for a 3D application, then I am more mindful about overlapping loose pieces of fabric

That carries through to outfits, too.
1. Would a cosplayer be able to feasibly build this?
2. Would they be able to put this on their body? How does it stay in place?
3. Will they be able to use the restroom wearing this to a con?
4. Is it going to inhibit their ability to move in a dangerous way?

I'm wired for some level of practicality, so whenever I'm making a person or creature, I always consider "what is the functional PURPOSE of this adaptation" other than just Looking Cool™

Sure, sometimes some physics breaking is necessary, but that's where believability is supported by worldbuilding
