The AI-Augmented Scientist The promise and pitfalls of using AI tools to boost my capabilities as a scientist

As a rare climate scientist working in Silicon Valley, I've been drinking from the AI firehose a lot more than my peers. I thought it would be helpful to lay out my experiences of both the promise and pitfalls of using AI to accelerate scientific research:

What the National Center for Atmospheric Research means to the atmospheric sciences Born out of a time of great need for the federal government, NCAR plays a role with few analogues.

Great piece out today in Physics Today on historical origins, contemporary relevance, & fundamental irreplaceability of the National Center for Atmospheric Research, which remains at imminent risk of dismantling for partisan political reasons.

The @agu.org has a nice tool to help you write and submit a comment to NSF about why it's essential for the nation to keep NCAR intact. They have guidance on how to write a good comment and the specific questions NSF seeks comment on. Deadline is Mar. 13.

U.S. government has lost more than 10,000 STEM Ph.D.s since Trump took office A Science analysis reveals how many were fired, retired, or quit across 14 agencies

This is beyond concerning. You won't see the damage right away, but the foundation of future US science has been badly weakened - and rebuilding could take decades, if it happens at all.

I would strongly encourage those who value the scientific & societal legacies of NCAR to offer feedback by March 13. I would expect, under present circumstances, perspectives from industry partners will be especially critical, though everyone's voice is of course important.
