15.10.2025 00:03 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0local election voting closing at 12 midday is insane
considering general election voting closes 7 hours later and its not nearly advertised enough, most people probably assume its the same - wonder how many people rocked up to drop off a ballot or special vote only to be told it had closed

i think the total number of nzers that are members of any political party would be less than 100,000

Brown wasn't an independent, he has his own group Fix Auckland
13.10.2025 23:03 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0Mayor of Auckland has the single biggest personal mandate (in theory at least) in NZ*, it should be seen as a very important office to hold
(* Heck it's probably the biggest in Oceania with the lord mayor of Brisbane in second afaik)
#nzpol
Sidenote, truly insane to have one council have a third of the population *and also* utilise basically the same governance setup as any rural town district with a fraction the population
#nzpolp
Labour and the Greens really should in future get together and pick a candidate for the position they can dual endorse (whilst FPP is the system used)
Heck, why not have some sort of progressive "primary" election, get some media attention earlier in the year build hype
#nzpol
Turnout was doomed from when it was obvious Auckland wouldnt have a competitive mayoral race, they have a third of the country so when they're low the overall result is low

#wikipedia article on Māori ward referendums got more than double the views of the main local election article over the weekend

This is great. Also, let’s do away with private election companies. They continue to do a garbage job and excluding Māori candidates from the booklet this year was unforgivable.

I'm not sure if they will be.
I'm gonna ask the various councils after final results are released if they have this information.
Hastings right split the vote 3 ways basically

12.10.2025 00:03 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0Ok after an afternoon of results, texts, calls, messages on other apps and emails, I have some thoughts on today’s Local Election results
1) Voter turnout is depressing. 32%ish on average across AoNZ is pathetic.
2) The Māori Wards referendum should never have happened - it was a racebaiting farce…

I can't count - should say 25 not 28 voted against (will update on wikipedia version)

Auckland:
especially considering a lot of "independents" aren't and if you do like 5 seconds of research their party ties become apparent but this information isn't readily given to voters
#nzpol
kinda why i think local elections need to be more partisan, can't exactly rock up on election day and vote for the party you know roughly aligns with your views if they aren't running - a bunch of nobody-independents is disenfranchising (no offence to any ind candidates)
#nzpol
actually surprising to me that it seems the māori ward referendums haven't driven turnout, most places seem to be about where they were in 2022. or maybe it has driven turnout and without it we'd be doing even worse?

Well before the sun rises, the roller doors open to an unassuming warehouse in Christchurch. Voting papers for most local body elections in New Zealand will be processed here.
From about 5.20am, tens of thousands of votes from across the country are delivered, sorted and processed by Electionz’s…
wait the US not having a budget means the us embassy in nz isnt posting on their social media = no new public domain images during this period 😞
