Will Shame Jones be serving up penguin or the last orange roughy to his fishing industry buddies?

"If we consider books as medicine we understand that it’s good to have many at home rather than a few: when you want to feel better, then you go to the 'medicine closet' and choose a book. Not a random one, but the right book for that moment” - Umberto Eco

The idea that NZ could have 'opted out' of global inflation surge is daft. Almost as daft as NZ opting almost uniquely for a recession.
A cartoon shows Chris Bishop driving an old car. The car is labelled “Road User Charges Plan.” It’s kicking up a lot of dust which obscures a billboard saying “Highest Unemployment in 5 Years.” Bishop says, “I’d say it’s time for some distraction - like burnouts and doughnuts.”
Kicking myself for falling for the cynical, bait and switch, Peters bullshit again. Emmerson didn’t draw him but this cartoon highlights the actual story: fewer and fewer jobs.
09.08.2025 19:50 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0Just did what I should’ve done first: read the teacher’s notes at the end of the resource. It’s a beautiful piece of work, excellent for introducing ideas about marae. Good readers might cope with it as a reader. Struggling readers (of English) might continue to struggle. Excellent whole class book.
09.08.2025 12:08 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0…that purpose. I’d use it as a book I’d read to a class, or present it to kids who are already well down the track to solid English literacy.
I agree with Taika Waititi’s assessment of racism in NZ. And I hope I’m doing my bit to challenge it. AND I think this book could confuse young readers
…for kids that are struggling those words represent another barrier.
The book under discussion looks great. I would definitely include it on bookshelves in schools and libraries.
But if I was teaching struggling readers to read English (and we 100% have a crisis) I would avoid the book for…
My cognitive dissonance is gonna cost sleep tonight.
I wanna join in with the “Racists!” finger pointing. But…
…there is a definite scope and sequence that helps struggling learners make rapid progress in reading English.
Of course words that are exceptions can be accommodated but… 🧵
My husband - who turned 80 yesterday - worked in the rail industry for fifty-five years, starting as an apprentice driver and ending up in rosters & scheduling. Peters is exactly the kind of arsehole who ended up as the guest of honour at too many work funerals over those years. #nzpol

Also, he gives himself away when he asks “Who put you up to this?” As others have said, journalists would have a field day with Peters in hi-vis and helmet. Let’s hope the cartoonists weave their magic anyway…

I’ve faced it myself, rarely. I’ve seen it in schools, often.
Playground bully. End of.
Peters got mad when he was asked to wear hi-viz inside the CRL; said he worked on the Snowy Mountain tunnels in Australia back in the day and "no-one benefits" from this.
121 men died on the Snowy River project - 4 Pike Rivers. The good old days, apparently. www.stuff.co.nz/politics/360...

Someone has 3 dollars and you tell them you’re gonna give them 2 more so they’ll have 5 now and 2 more to someone who has 1 so they’ll have 3 now and the person who already had 3 will complain that they got their 3 without handouts and this sums up the average rightwing voter basically.
