Itβs worth remembering that historically, medieval knights had a much/most of their social standing tied up in being fit and capable of inflicting violence. Training and practicing fighting in armour meant they were real good at it. Like very toxic gym bros crossed with private military contractors.

YouTube video by Dequitem
Peasants vs Knight | realistic, non-choreographed fight
On that topic, YouTube fed me this video last year, and itβs one of the few times you see a fight from the perspective of lightly armoured guys fighting and losing against someone in armour.
It would have been terrifying, even for seasoned soldiers of the era.

If you spend time in the bad place, youβre hearing this claim a lot:
Alberta sends $23B more to Ottawa than it gets back. If we separated, weβd erase the $9B deficit and have a $14B surplus.
It sounds simple. Itβs wrong. Here's why. π§΅

I Donβt Recognize Alberta Anymore - Macleans.ca
My province has always fought with Ottawa. Whatβs new is a premier who gives legitimacy to separation.
Maclean's approached me about writing a personal essay on Alberta Secession and my opposition to it.
It was published today.

For sure. I donβt know why we donβt have hero-worship memes for Francis Pegahmagabow like there are for Simo HΓ€yhΓ€.
Dude got 370 sniper kills and captured another 300 in WWI.

When I step into Alberta classrooms and see immigrant and refugee children excited to learn, and teachers inspired to teach, I see my motherβs mischievous grin and feel her fierce curiosity. May Albertans never lose the compassion and common sense that makes public education a public good.

Good interview. My concern around foreign interference has increased a lot recently, but not so much around the US State Dept or CIA handing Stay Free Alberta a big cheque. Iβm more worried about something similar to how Russia was funding a bunch of MAGA influencers a couple years ago.

Exclusive: White House uses USAID funds for budget director Vought's security, documents show

The Project 2025 author is using millions of dollars in USAID money for his own security detail.
It is estimated that 762,000 people have *already died* as a result of Elon Musk and Russell Voughtβs obscene murder of USAID, including more than 500,000 children.
Vought is a mass murderer.

But more than that, the growth of the Brexit movement from a handful of ignorable cranks into a movement capable of winning a referendum is the relevant thing.
Brexit was a stupid fringe obsession for years, but they had an easy narrative of βEUβs at fault for everything bad, leaving will fix allβ

Itβs a bit closer than that in a couple ways.
The EU is more than just a trade deal: itβs a huge amount of regulatory integration on hundreds of different things that go along with being part of the common market. It was kinda halfway to being part of a single federated country.

βWorryingβ may not be helpful before we see how many signatures they get (and I pray that they fail).
But Iβm pretty alarmed at the explosion of separatist content on Facebook. Their cocktail of resentment towards Ottawa and promises of a utopian independent Alberta risks gaining converts.

The history of the Christian right is, I would argue, a history of the secularization of the religious right itself. The replacement of theology by politics as their ultimate concern. Now politics is their theology.
