The president didn't bother to make the case for war in a marathon State of the Union address and then he fucked off to his sweaty gilded country club so he could literally phone in an unconstitutional war.

Every single Democrat needs to be screaming about this at full volume.

I know this feels pointless but everyone has to call their congressional reps and say they oppose war with Iran and they oppose Trump illegally starting one without congressional approval β€” both

5 Calls can help you make the call:

Sure, I could have subjected myself to hours of lies, countless attacks, and invented "victories" in the #SOTU, but somehow catching up with Oscar Nominee One Battle After Another seemed like near-perfect counterprogramming. (Illustration by Chirrikenstein for The New Yorker)

as possible as yeast
as imminent as bread
a collection of safe habits
a collection of cares
less certain than i seem
more certain than i was

You are who I love, writing letters, calling the senators, you who, with the seconds of your body (with your time here), arrive on buses, on trains, in cars, by foot to stand in the January streets against the cool and brutal offices, saying: YOUR CRUELTY DOES NOT SPEAK FOR ME

You are who I love, you struggling to see

You struggling to love or find a question

You better than me, you kinder and so blistering with anger, you are who I love, standing in the wind, salvaging the umbrellas, graduating from school, wearing holes in your shoes

You are who I love
weeping or touching the faces of the weeping

Reading this just broke me this morning. The abject cruelty and misdirected hatred this man witnessed, the callous disregard for this man’s life is, at time when so much is so awful, still shocks and infuriates me, as it should anyone with an ounce of humanity.

On this #MLKDay, every single Republican and enabler of the current chaos should keep Dr. King’s name out of their mouths. Spoiler alert: They won’t, cherry-picking quotations out of context to serve a white supremacist agenda that isn’t even bothering to hide in plain sight anymore.

They're not even trying to pretend a little that ICE is remotely serving its stated function, or that there will ever be a credible investigation of this murder.

For Renee Nicole Good
Killed by ICE. on January 7, 2026
by Amanda Gorman
They say she is no more,
That there her absence roars,
Blood-blown like a rose.
Iced wheels flinched & froze.
Now, bare riot of candles,
Dark fury of flowers,
Pure howling of hymns.

If for us she arose,
Somewhere, in the pitched deep of our grief,
Crouches our power, The howl where we begin,
Straining upon the edge of the crooked crater
Of the worst of what we've been.
Change is only possible,
& all the greater,
When the labour
& bitter anger of our neighbors
Is moved by the love
& better angels of our nature.

What they call death & void,
We know is breath & voice;
In the end, gorgeously,
Endures our enormity.

You could believe departed to be the dawn
When the blank night has so long stood.
But our bright-fled angels will never be fully gone,
When they forever are so fiercely Good.

January 6, five years on: sustained effort by Trump to rewrite history President and Republican allies have tried to make sure the deadly attack on the Capitol has been erased from memory

There are many of us who will NEVER forget this attack on our government, our free and fair elections, and those law enforcement officers who put themselves in harm's way to prevent an outcome that could have been far worse than the violence and destruction we saw with our own eyes on that day.

Tender
Sophie Klahr
I spend late morning weeping with the news:
a black bear with burnt paws is euthanized
along the latest wildfire's newest edge.
It was crawling on its forearms, seeking
a place to rest. I Google more; reports
leak out: the bear had bedded down behind
a house, below a pine, to lick its paws.
In hours before its end, officials named
It Tenderfoot, though some reports report
just Tender. Later, I will teach a class
where well discuss the lengths of lines in poems.
I'll say a sonnet is a little song
to hold a thing that otherwise cannot
be held: a lonely thing; a death; a bear.
