So you’d prefer Australian leaders put the country in a dangerous position pissing off the key country that we would need to come to our aid if someone attacked us just to make you feel good about yourself? Glad you’re not in charge.

It’s a total mess. The Iranians deserve a chance at liberation, at democracy, but I don’t see Trump able to deliver it.

Watching Penny Wong’s press conference. We couldn’t have a better person navigating Australia through the dual chaos of a Trump regime and a murderous Iranian regime. Those claiming the Australian govt should be making simple statements of protest right now underestimate the complexity of reality.

Australia hasn’t collaborated with the US on these strikes, hasn’t promised to join them. They’ve done the bare minimum of what an ally has to do - same as Europe, UK. Amazing how all the armchair foreign policy experts on here seem to think managing an alliance with the US is a simple matter.

There’s some people here who seem surprised to learn Iran has killed an estimated (could be more) 40,000 Iranians in a short period in January. Almost like the world looks away when brutal dictatorships kill their own citizens to stop them trying to democratise.

US haven’t broken up with Australia until they refuse to defend Australia in a war. The Australian US alliance will outlast Trump. You wake up and realise that Australia’s leaders have the difficult job of keeping Australians safe while also dealing with psychopathic US president. It’s not simple.

Trump has attacked Iran because the public were inching closer to the truth of his involvement in sex crimes with Epstein. I know we all know this, but let’s say it out loud. Trump is starting a Middle East war to distract from his child abuse crimes.

I think I’m not privy to the complicated game of chess going on with Australia’s response to the US’s attack and clearly the government is doing its best not to destroy alliances that might make us less safe. I’m so sick of the knee jerk “this is simple” debate on here. It is not simple, never was.

I don’t trust Trump in taking this action. But once he’s taken it Australia has no choice but to support the decision (albeit don’t have to and shouldn’t join in). Also, the Iranian people deserve a chance at reform change - they are being slaughtered. Like I said, complicated!

What is our option then? Break up with the US and leave ourselves without a strong ally? I know it is far from ideal that Australia is reliant on the US to keep us safe but that’s the reality. Our own defences would not last more than a week on our own.

I agree that Australia absolutely should not be sending support to the US in terms of joining them in this action. But I’m also realistic enough about Australia’s position in the world to know Australia will never publicly oppose the US - there’s a thing called strategic alliances you can’t ignore.

40,000 dead Iranians is not peace.

Because we live in the real world, not a theoretical one. Do you think if someone tried to attack Australia, Iran would come to our aid? No? We need the US no matter which psychopath happens to be president. Reality is more complicated.

All these things can be true at once:
👉🏻The Iran regime should be toppled - they’ve just killed 40,000+ Iranians
👉🏻Trump is the worst and most incompetent person to try to destroy the Iran regime
👉🏻US’s allies have to support the US because otherwise they’re supporting Iran.

It’s unfair to call Trump childish. Children are far better than he is.

For instance, during the Voice, No campaign provoked resentment by claiming Indigenous Australians were getting something non-Indigenous Australians weren’t. The Voice was called “reverse racism”. The whole point of the Voice was to make society more equal - No voters did not want that. Complicated.

I think it’s a mistake to think everyone wants a more equal society and that this will fix the problem of racism and hatred. As I’ve written about many times, Trump his risen because his supporters OPPOSE equality. It’s more complicated than “just fix everything” unfortunately.
