mostly because it isnt directed by miyazaki, who directed 1 and 3. other than that ds2 changes a lot of things from the first one that make it feel like a smoother experience. humanity was kind of a nothing mechanic in ds1 if you didnt use multiplayer but has more relevance in ds2s design
