10.05.2025 11:27 β π 4 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0It's as good a time as any to post some more Boris Artzybasheff. This is in the category of "can be interpreted as speculative evolution even if that wasn't necessarily the artist's intention".
15.04.2025 07:50 β π 4 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I spent ages fruitlessly looking for a bigger version too! I came across his work when I noticed one of his WW2 cartoons in my feed and from there I eventually arrived at this unexpected "cursed spec evo" one. Really amazing artist.

While aboard a large coach, I became aware of a translucent SKY BEAST, staying just above the large skylight present over the vehicle's front half. Denser, whiter organs were visible internally, and two panels at its leading edge had horizontal bars interpreted as pupils. Oh yeah, this was a dream.

Here's 2 Tanystropheus longobardicus using their neck membranes cooperatively to hunt fish while in flight!

05.01.2025 17:36 β π 23 π 5 π¬ 4 π 0Two half-human half-octopus creatures drawn in pen and colored pencil on paper. They are standing like humans and shaped like humans from the feet up to the torso. From the chest up, they have the head and arms of an octopus, with the octopus's eyes protruding slightly where the human's armpits would be, and the eight octopus arms reaching up toward the sky. The creatures' skin shades from light brown on the human half to light purple on the octopus half. The creature on the left has a visible belly button and is wearing a white loincloth. The creature on the right is naked with its digestive tract drawn as an anatomical diagram and labeled with the anus between the human legs, the stomach in the torso, and the mouth a beak at the center of the octopus arms.
A photo of a 1-page comic titled "How to draw an Anatomically Correct Octoperson." The problem of a "classic" octopus-human having two mouths is solved by combining to upper half of a human with the mantle and funnel of an octopus.
I have Opinions about octopus mer-people; the way they are usually drawn gives them 2 mouths and 0 ani which is a real problem!!!
Thought I'd gotten it out of my system a few years ago with a silly comic, but my daughter just pointed out an alternative design. Thus, a coda
How to make a cephalopod. (With cartoony drawings) 1. Remove limbs. (Smiling human with dotted lines at shoulders and hips) 2. Attach to lips. (Human with flat mouth expression, just head and torso. Arms and legs are floating above with arrows pointing from them to lips) 3. See? It works. (Smiling human cephalopod with arms and legs around mouth. Drawing of an octopus shows anatomical similarity.)
How to make a cephalopod, part II. Internal anatomy. (Cartoony drawings with instructions) 1. Remove urogenital and digestive exit holes. (A human cephalopod with simplified systems in its body drawn in different colors. X's are next to the anus, urethral and genital openings) 2. Redirect exit tubes to nose. (The systems are partially rearranged, with arrows pointing to the nostril) 3. Breathe out to excrete, reproduce, and swim! (The creature looks happy and is giving a double thumbs up with the limbs attached to its lips. Internal systems are fully rearranged and an arrow points outward from the nostril)
That's actually the opening to the mantle cavity. Their mantle isn't their head but their torso.
Cephalopods don't have the head-torso-limb body plan like we do. Instead, they have the torso-head-limb body plan.

02.09.2023 16:37 β π 10 π 1 π¬ 2 π 0Did humanity invent the wheel? No, we merely REinvented it. According to experts*, dimetrodon's spines may have allowed this predator to roll down hills like a wheel and impale smaller prey. Evidence for this is that "dimetrodon" is clearly a contraction of "dimet roll down".
