I mean, yes? Of course? Neither one of us has ever shut up since exiting the womb because of all the thoughts, so getting all that out on paper (or screen, whatever) means em dashes to say all the things.

It’s just science.

I mean, ADHD is just all the thoughts that need to be expelled. All. The. Time. so it stands to reason that because ADHDers talk in asides, we write in asides since we write how we speak.

Honestly, if you drew a Venn diagram of fanfic writers & academic writers and who has ADHD, it would be a flat circle—that’s why we need em dashes!

Fun fact: academics also use em dashes in our scholarly writing like it’s our job! We have a lot of thoughts and em dashes are great asides, so voilà!

The use of em dashes in my writing—that I do a lot of—is the equivalent of my ADHD need to talk in asides because I have many thoughts that need to escape or I will perish.

Real—so real. I’ve had those “aha” moments of like, “oh, I’ve been this way since I was a tiny baby child,” but especially teaching middle schoolers & seeing myself in them. It’s wild but also maddening.

It’s so, so awful and only getting worse. But like, setting an alarm just to vegetate rather than scroll endlessly? Setting an alarm just to do basic tasks so I, you know, DO THEM? it’s the only way I will get anything actually accomplished.

In my world, the Christmas season truly begins when my mom’s cookies have arrived and I’m shoveling them in my face.

Peanuts was an integral and ubiquitous part of my childhood (all facets, not just Christmas!), and we always had Peanuts character ornaments on the tree. My mom & @straylize.bsky.social still have those same ornaments, but tradition is tradition and so I carry them on in my own way 💜
