@hjarmstrong.bsky.social's eventual genealogy, heritage, history and preservation travel project. Also building @yoretravel.bsky.social. Humbled daily by my ancestors. Neurodivergent and a misfit.

He was definitely triple-dog-dared to do it.

More specifically, GenAI tools made for image/video/music/written works creation. Sorry, that's what I mean when I say GenAI even though there are other things (like LLMs) that fit under that umbrella.

Just to clarify, I'm not denouncing AI as I believe there are legit uses for it (not a fan of genAI, tho). But the insane pace at which it is being added into everything and adopted by consumers has really altered expectations of new products and the features they should have right out of the gate.

Just over here wondering if it's even worth the time and effort to build a new tool/website in the genealogy industry if it won't (at least initially) include AI as a feature.

More than pasties and beaches: Cornwall celebrates St Piran’s Day amid cultural revival In Launceston, revellers are celebrating β€˜Cornishness becoming cool’ as well as the region’s patron saint

"According to the Cornwall Heritage Trust, St Piran was the 'merriest, hardest-drinking, hardest-living holy man Cornwall ever knew.'"

Sounds like a great partner(-in-crime) for a pub crawl.

Learning that Ancestry has transcribed all 2.4 million Revolutionary War pension files makes me want to scream after having transcribed a 70-PAGE FILE just a few months ago. 😩😩😩 #NotatRootstech

Don't get me wrong, it's amazing, but also, WORST TIMING IS THE STORY OF MY LIFE.

Me: Demystifying the American Genealogical-Biographical Index (AGBI) because I've bumped up against it multiple times. And even though I figured it out eventually, I'd like some tips on finding info faster.

Also worth noting for the β€˜everything is online’ crowd that the numbers of archives being destroyed means that an increasing proportion cannot ever be online.

Only the online portion of the event starts today and goes through Sunday. It's already March 5 in half of the world. If you look at the in-person presentations tab, they're only from March 5-7.

Another big shift in autosomal DNA testing. FamilyTreeDNA is moving to targeted sequencing, meaning more coverage and higher resolution where it matters for genealogy. We’re watching genetic genealogy grow up in real time. I’m especially watching how this impacts distant match discovery. #genealogy
