Continuing to listen to David Levering Lewis's riveting biography of Du Bois.

In today's chapter, Lewis suggested that Du Bois combined the voices of Sojourner Truth and Schopenhauer and I have not been able to think straight since.

Day 4 of #WomenWhoRethoughtTheWorld: philosopher, logician, and psychologist Christine Ladd-Franklin!

Ladd-Franklin rethought thought (!) by asking how mathematics & #logic are related. She rethought color by combining #psychology & evolutionary science into a theory of perception.

Day 3 of #WomenWhoRethoughtTheWorld: theorist, novelist & reformer Frances Ellen Watkins Harper!

In "Our Greatest Want," Harper rethought #Tocqueville's theory of public opinion & the story of Moses to argue for a multiracial, democratic society.

Seconded! Here's an image of an exhibit honoring her at the Peace Palace in The Hague. Her novel--Die Waffen Nieder, or Lay Down your Arms--launched modern #pacifism and is absolutely worth reading today.

Thrilled to build on this post--Zitkala-Ša was my next pick for #WomenWhoRethoughtTheWorld.

Zitkala-Ša, a Yankton Dakota Sioux, rethought the relation between colonizing teacher & indigenous pupil, refusing to call the culture attempting to kill her own a "civilization."

This #WomensHistoryMonth, I'm highlighting 19th and 20th-century women whose work helped rethink the world.

First up: Jane Addams!

Addams' research with Chicago immigrants shaped a philosophy of #pacifism recognized by a #Nobel #Peace Prize in 1931.

On this *particular* first day of #womenshistorymonth, this image seemed appropriate.

These American women were on a ship bound for Europe to try to end WWI.

I love Black activist Mary Church #Terrell's refusal here to let her (white) readers dismiss her simple reporting of facts as "bitterness." What a powerful way to claim your story.

I am riveted by the account of Du Bois studying German #philosophy at Humboldt University in #Berlin in this incredible biography. The audiobook read by Courtney Vance is . . . did I already say riveting? Resolved: get more philosophers talking about this ...

Exactly my first reaction. Turns out there was a bunch of Nietzsche-inspired feminists in Stöcker's generation--Hedwig Dohm, Lily Braun, Rosa Mayreder, of course Lou Salomé although that one is complicated

She was absolutely an individualist--but increasingly opposed to capitalism and its links to militarism/colonialism in her post-WWI pacifist years. Indeed a totally fascinating case study.

Turning to international writer, speaker & reformer Mary Church Terrell this #blackhistorymonth, grateful for Alison Parker's excellent biography. #Terrell was often the only Black woman at major #pacifism conferences in the early #19C & articulated a powerful vision of peace through racial justice.

Loved talking to @juliettemarchant.bsky.social about the complicated life and philosophy of Helene Stöcker. Her #feminism was radical, her #pacifism was uncompromising, her vision for human flourishing was hugely problematic. Lots to think about.
