Chapter 1 Celeste The burn in my thighs is nauseating. Lactic acid is a bitch, but I’d rather this than my bare skin on the oil-stained asphalt of the parking lot. Crouched behind my car, I don’t think he sees me. I can still hear the heel of his shoe scraping against the loose rocks as he searches the rows, but he blessedly doesn’t get to me. Just when I think I’m in the clear, my hands wobble, and the melting ice in the coffee rattles. His footsteps come to a sudden halt. “I know you can hear me. This is your last warning. The next time I see you, I’ll call the police!” shouts the building’s security guard. Modern Media must pay him a hefty sum with the passion he has for his job. Not until I’m certain he’s gone, do I slowly ease the throbbing in my legs, careful not to make myself too visible. Three days in a row we’ve done this dance and not once has he lost his zeal for chasing me off the compound.
