With the new S.H.I.E.L.D. omnibus out, here’s a Night Machine sketch. I still remember how to draw him.

Success is anytime I make something I'm happy with or when I manage to pull something off I've never done before. This is, at once, a low bar & an ever rising high bar.
I love when someone seems to like something I've done, but does it count as a success?
Success to me has fuck all to do with money.

Ah thanks! I think that the Epitaphs series was the only series they'll be doing frontispieces in. Too bad. It was a good gig.

Totally agree. I say this with love for many of those comics.

The battle that was fought, that I'm thinking of, was fought about 40? years ago when many of those examples came out. Creators on those books thought the next wave would be even more sophisticated, & saw the rise of 90s Image as a step backwards.

With only manga to sustain our dying veins.

Once upon a time, comics fought to become a medium for grown-ups. That battle was thoroughlyΒ lost. Now we're left to wander the YA wastelands.

In the 60's the Marvel universe was created. 30 years later, the Image universe and Legend imprint were created. 30 years later, seven more Batmen were created.

I don't mean monetarily successful. Just to be clear.

14.10.2025 21:00 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

I think it's probably true that it's easier to create good work in comics than it is in animation. It's a very flexible medium, with very little restraints. I think the conclusion is that comics are better.

14.10.2025 20:56 β€” πŸ‘ 13    πŸ” 1    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

Sure. I'm sure it has happened more times than that animation guy knew.

14.10.2025 20:51 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 2    πŸ“Œ 0

I heard an animator once point out how artists who work in animation, but then make a move into comics, are more successful than artists going from comics into animation. He took this as evidence that animation was the better medium, which is a weird conclusion.

Struzan's stuff is like magic. He could put just layers of life into his work. I had a phase where I obsessed over Struzan. I think about his work often.

Yeah. You can be listening to a podcast about something totally innocuous and suddenly get traumatically wrenched back to that election year by one comment.
