I once asked a bookseller at a large indie store how many people would have to buy a book for it to get the attention of the store buyer and cause an additional order and they said: Three.

I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

I wish I didn’t have to share this. But the BBC has decided to censor my first Reith Lecture.

They deleted the line in which I describe Donald Trump as β€œthe most openly corrupt president in American history.” /1

China’s CO2 emissions have been flat or falling for past 18 months, analysis finds World’s biggest polluter on track to hit peak emissions target early but miss goal for cutting carbon intensity

This a big deal: "China’s carbon dioxide emissions have been flat or falling for 18 months"

China's economy has grown by ~5% in the last year, so this comprehensively debunks the idea (again) that emissions are tied to growth. So yes, faster progress needed, but this is how you turn the corner.

Yes, this is correct. And the reason is because our capitalist classes have decided that it is not sufficiently profitable, so they're not going to do it.

We must understand this reality. Capital *cannot* be relied upon to address the climate crisis.

We’re challenging Starmer on climate failure As Keir Starmer heads for Brazil, his government is failing to meet the challenge of global heating – so we’re taking legal action.

We can't meet our climate change targets by exporting emissions. That's why we've taken the first formal step in legal proceedings against the Government. goodlaw.social/s87x

This will be a long thread on yesterday police massacre in Rio.

In nothern Rio de Janeiro city, there is a couple of hills called Complexo da Penha. It's Comando Vermelho("Red Command", a drug gang), or CV, territory.

CV is the greatest gang in Rio, second in the whole Brazil.

Say no to bullying of NHS staff Treatment of striking NHS staff This helps to explain the treatment of NHS workers on strike in Gloucestershire in recent months.  A small but mighty group of workers have been on strike since...

I just learnt that over Β£100,000 of NHS funds have been wasted on defending bullying instead of paying frontline staff fairly.

Sign the petition to demand that Gloucestershire Hospitals Trust investigate how their CEO, Kevin McNamara, treats NHS staff. www.megaphone.org.uk/petitions/sa...

Congratulations to all who fought for it and the present and future artists of all sorts in Ireland. That includes me πŸ‘ŒWe’re just comin to the end of a 3 year pilot scheme. It’s been a roaring success. For every €1 paid out to the 2000 participants, the government got €1.46 back. Can’t argue with that. Other countries are already taking note."

Damn. This is amazing. Β£325 per week, paid monthly, for 3 years - and the result was a profit for the Irish economy:

On the 1st of October 1965, the US collaborated in initiating a coup against Sukarno, the first president of independent Indonesia. The coup-makers installed a brutal right-wing dictatorship that systematically exterminated up to one million people with the direct support of the CIA.

You know how I hate to harp on about this, but nothing is ever going to change until we address it: How can this have happened when all our loudest political commentators stridently agreed *for years* that the public were crying out for these Serious people and these Sensible policies?

New research published in The Lancet finds that Western unilateral sanctions have caused 38 million deaths since 1970. The average death toll ranges from 400,000 to over 1 million per year.

Staggering levels of violence. This system is intolerable and must be replaced.
