04.08.2025 14:07 โ ๐ 3 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0I could go into much more depth on procedural v. OOP, the oddities of TIC-80's sprite mapping, the insane sfx sampler, and multiple features I didn't even have time to use. But for now, this is all I've got on sproqet. Let me know what you think. Also, send me your GMTK games!
03.08.2025 17:59 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0It also gives me a bit more perspective on using an engine as well. GameMaker is really, really great at what it does! I hadn't realized how much I took for granted clock timing, alarms, animation speed... It will likely continue to be the main tool I use when prototyping or shipping out games.
03.08.2025 17:50 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0The results of taking on such a challenge are, as I'm sure you can tell, mixed. The considerations and limitations of a fantasy console are super inspiring, and I can now approach the amazing games in the pico8/TIC-80 scenes with so much more perspective.
03.08.2025 17:46 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0If that weren't enough, this is also the first game I've ever written in python. TIC-80 supports lua as it's default or recommended language, but after having worked with the Playdate SDK earlier this year I wanted to challenge myself to add a new language into my game portfolio as it were.
03.08.2025 17:43 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0But I do feel ever so slightly proud of it anyways; as a first for me, I have picked up a new game making framework entirely in the course of one jam for this one. This is my first game with the utterly charming fantasy console, the TIC-80!
03.08.2025 17:41 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0The self-consciousness comes from my own standards, but primarily weighing sproqet against my previous entries to GMTK or similar length jams. I would go as far to say it's not any good.
It's a rigid little snake-like game in which you follow a color series, rinse and repeat. Nothing special.
After a long jam hiatus, I am back and have submitted what is perhaps my most primitive game for this year's GMTK jam: sproqet

I am simultaneously self-conscious and quite proud about this little thing, and I'll tell you why in a thread here.

I am on the fence about buying one of the de-Googled Androids as my next phone (on iOS for years now). Do you think support is any better or easier on these newer out of the box options?

This is a heartening read as someone who is feeling burnt out creatively, due in no small part to feeling walled-in by tools. Itโs inspiring and I would love to read more about how others are using lighter weight frameworks or hand-rolled solutions. Even more so for fantasy console devs.

Repost for those who may have missed it, I made a cute little Playdate game!
A daily art app with fun limitations. Most importantly, you get exciting (or ordinary) prompts every day! For 5/28, a great one: Draw a CAMERA. A nice little freebie in advance of _Season 2_. #playdate #gamedev
Today's prompt in Fineliner is RECORD PLAYER.
I now realize that the trouble with making and demonstrating an art app means I have to be good at art! Unfortunately I am not, perhaps my slipshod attempt can be outdone. If nothing else, you can enjoy the chill synth loop in the background. #playdate
I made a little drawing app for the Playdate! It's called Fineliner.
jonah-srg.itch.io/fineliner
A line art drawing tool with daily art prompts. Drawing continuously on the grid is a fun limitation, and the crank-to-erase action is so satisfying.
