As a federally funded researcher, every time I see the now customary start of war videos showing a BGM-109 TLAM launching from the bow magazine of a U.S. DDG at $2.5M a pop (FY 2023), I see a fully funded 5 year flagship NIH R01 biomedical research grant zooming off into oblivion.

25.01.2026 19:35 โ ๐ 54 ๐ 8 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 2This line graph illustrates the percentage change in agency staff levels from the previous year for nine major U.S. federal scientific and health organizations between the fiscal years 2016 and 2025. The agencies tracked include the CDC, Department of Energy, EPA, FDA, NASA, NIH, NIST, NOAA, and NSF. For the majority of the timeline between 2016 and 2023, the agencies show relatively stable fluctuations, generally staying within a range of +5% to -5% change per year. However, there is a dramatic and uniform plummet starting in the 2024โ25 period. Every agency depicted shows a sharp downward trajectory, with staffing losses ranging from approximately -15% to over -25%. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) shows the most significant decline, dropping to roughly -26%, while the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) shows the least severe but still substantial drop at approximately -15%.
This is the most astonishing graph of what the Trump regime has done to US science. They have destroyed the federal science workforce across the board. The negative impacts on Americans will be felt for generations, and the US might never be the same again.

Seems like voluntarily installing a secret police surveillance node at oneโs own expense might be an action that oneโs neighbors find upsetting. Would be weird and totally unrelated if all of a sudden lots of these went missing, or had sensors damaged with lasers etc

Itโs been amazing to watch the growth of the biomedical industry in NYC over the past decade. Itโs also terrible watching it be destroyed by federal actions. To remain competitive with respect to national and global centers of biomedical research and industry, NY state must step in and invest!

Another new policy from the geniuses in NIH leadership.
Apparently, ~70% of grant applications for most mechanisms will not be "triaged", i.e. not discussed at study section.
This is an increase from the ~50% level that has been in place for many years.
I don't know the rationale for this

NEW: The first two years of Massachusetts' millionaire tax has raised $3 billion more than expected.
And rather than driving the rich away, IPS researchers found that the number of millionaires has *increased.*
Tax the rich. Greg Ryan in @bloomberg.com:
If they send the money out $2k at a time to 100s of millions of people, it will be that much harder for the Supreme Court to rule the tariffs unconstitutional because it would be impossible to claw the money back. So heads trump is emperor, tails thereโs no consequences when he does illegal stuff.
