Michigan utility commissioner appointment sparks environmental justice concerns Gov. Whitmer's appointment of Shaquila Myers to the Michigan Public Service Commission raises concerns about DTE Energy, Consumer Energy influence, environmental advocates say.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer finally revealed her pick for Michigan's newest utility regulator: a political ally with little energy experience who raised funds and worked for the former House speaker while he received gobs of utility money and killed utility reform bills planetdetroit.org/2025/07/whit...

With One Call, Trump Alters the Fate of a Contested Power Project

Watching the Republican Party’s most outspoken purported anti-monopolist carry the mantle of monopolies who have wanted Grain Belt dead for decades because it threatened their rent-seeking, all because β€œWind Bad” is telling.

"We can only adapt now, it's too late to decarbonize" feels like one of those anti-science spaces where the far left meets the far right. As an adaptation specialist: yes, we need to adapt and adaptation saves lives, but it has LIMITS and we'll meet them quickly if we don't stop using fossil fuels.

This is exactly right. Anyone voting for the spending bill is voting for higher energy bills and blackouts.

"We are devastated and heartbroken at the loss of our parents, Melissa and Mark. They were the bright lights at the center of our lives, and we can't believe they are gone. Their love for us was boundless. We miss them so much.
"We want everyone to know that we are both safe and with loved ones. We are grateful for the outpouring of love and support we have received, and we appreciate your respect for our family's privacy as we grieve.
"Our family would like to thank law enforcement for their swift action that saved others and for the coordination across communities that led to the arrest of the man who murdered our parents. We especially would like to thank the officers who were first on the scene to our parents' home and their heroic attempts to rescue our mom and dad.
"Our parents touched so many lives, and they leave behind an incredible legacy of dedication to their community that will live on in us, their friends, their colleagues and co-workers, and every single person who knew and loved them.
"If you would like to honor the memory of Mark and Melissa, please consider the following:
β€’ Plant a tree.
β€’ Visit a local park and make use of their amenities, especially a bike trail.
β€’ Pet a dog. A golden retriever is ideal, but any will do.
β€’ Tell your loved ones a cheesy dad joke and laugh about it.
β€’ Bake something β€” bread for Mark or a cake for Melissa, and share it with someone.
β€’ Try a new hobby and enjoy learning something.
β€’ Stand up for what you believe in, especially if that thing is justice and peace.
"Hope and resilience are the enemy of fear. Our parents lived their lives with immense dedication to their fellow humans. This tragedy must become a moment for us to come together. Hold your loved ones a little closer. Love your neighbors. Treat each other with kindness and respect. The best way to honor our parents' memory is to do something, whether big or small, to make our community just a little better for someone else."

Dominion Energy gave $250K to a Democratic candidate for Virginia AG *in a primary.*

(VA has unlimited corporate campaign contributions)

That might be the largest single contribution from a monopoly utility to a candidate anywhere, ever? Anyone got that beat?

A Maine utility paid a consultant nearly $700 an hour to convince regulators to raise customers' rates in order to boost utility profits, then sought to charge customers for that expense. Your utility is probably doing this too. energyandpolicy.org/maine-bill-p...

$1 Trillion In Economic Damage From U.S. House’s Reconciliation Bill Energy provisions of the β€œOne Big Beautiful Bill” would cost our economy years of growth with 830,000 lost jobs, $1.1 trillion less GDP, and 50% higher power prices.

The "One Big Beautiful Bill" would be an economic nightmare for American businesses and families:
-830,000 lost jobs by 2030
-$1.1 trillion in lost GDP by 2034
-50% higher wholesale power prices by 2035

Corporate utilities largely silent on Trump layoffs of staff who manage LIHEAP We asked utilities for comment: many defended LIHEAP broadly; none criticized the Administration or the staffing cuts.

Surely the utilities will object to this, right? Ummm

A screenshot showing the Trump Administration's proposed cut to the LIHEAP program of $4.025 billion.

Text: This Administration is committed to lowering energy costs for American families by unleashing energy production. The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) is unnecessary because States have policies preventing utility disconnection for low-income households, effectively making LIHEAP a pass-through benefitting utilities in the Northeast. Further, LIHEAP rewardsStates like New York and California, two of the top recipients for LIHEAP funding, which haveimplemented anti-consumer policies that drive up home energy prices. The GovernmentAccountability Office (GAO) has raised significant program integrity concerns related to fraud and abuse in LIHEAP. In 2010, GAO investigators audited seven States and found names of 11,000 dead people and hundreds of prisoners used as applicants for funds. More than 1,000 Federal employees whose Federal salary exceeded maximum income threshold received benefits and, in several cases, people living in million-dollar houses received benefits. The Budget proposes to end this program and to instead support low-income individuals through energy dominance, lower prices, and anAmerica First economic platform.

The Trump Admin says LIHEAP is no longer necessary - it'll just do energy dominance instead, and anyway all poor people are con artists.

Meanwhile, utility rates are skyrocketing to feed Wall St. profits.

Ending LIHEAP would result in people freezing and overheating to death in their homes.
