Sedgwickβs prescription is βreparative reading,β a theory of more flexible sense-making that can hold truth and provide an antidote to the overwhelming paranoia of our times. While the conventional wisdom states, βJust because youβre paranoid doesnβt mean you donβt have enemies,β Sedgwick turns this formula on its head: βJust because you have enemies doesnβt mean you have to be paranoid.β Or to put it another way, having a direct understanding of systemic oppression (the healthcare system, police violence, the fascist state) does not condemn a person to a categorically paranoid point of view. To practice a worldview more expansive and more open to possibilities than paranoia does not mean you have to deny the reality or gravity of oppression.
Feeling paranoid about stochastic violence and weaponized media? Me too. That's why I can't stop thinking about this incredibly helpful essay by @littlewow.online in @flaminghydra.com about the idea of "reparative reading" as a corrective to the "paranoid style." flaminghydra.com/issue-511/

Sea of Possibility
Along the coast of British Columbia, First Nations lead a bold effort to protect an intact marine ecosystem.
The Great Bear Sea moves from pact to practice in Canada. A decade after a 2014 agreement, the 101,200.0 kmΒ² Indigenous-led marine protected area network in the Great Bear Sea is shifting from pledge to implementation. buff.ly/fw4yA9N

It's a bit frustrating that I've written a cool children's book with polyamorous family with nerdy elements and most people who I tell want to read it but I can't get any agent interested in it yet. Anyone out there?

Bringing Optical Color to Ultrasound
By combining two imaging techniques, Lihong Wang and his colleagues have developed a tool that can image blood vessels, in color, while still being able to clearly detect tissue morphology
Scientists in California have created a new way to see inside the body by combining ultrasound with a light-based technique called photoacoustic imaging. The result produces fast 3D images that show both the shape of soft tissues and how blood is flowing.

Being a normie is BORING (or so it seems to me from the outside). Better to be awesome and fascinating to oneself and fellow weirdos/queerdos if you ask me π€ͺ

To me it sounds more like whistle blowing with a limited group of people about something very problematic/harmful your organization was about to do, after raising your concerns internally and having them summarily dismissed

My previous 2 issues with UploadVR:
1) When I raised concerns about AIβs environmental impact they were completely and condescendingly dismissed
2) Repeated gushing about how great a VR adaptation of Harry Potter would be, thus promoting the work of a notorious transphobe
Neither involved Ian FWIW

My initial reactions are agreement with @ianhamilton.netβs position and disgust with @uploadvr.com and the people running it. I cancelled my paid subscription to UploadVR yesterday over Ianβs firing, and after reading this I donβt want to engage with that site at all. Ugh
