Running the UK costs us (the government) about Β£1.3 billion pa or about Β£20,000 per person, all in.
So everyone (man, woman and child) needs to generate Β£20k for their share of the state. For each that doesn't, someone has to make it up or debt grows.
Another aporistic query!
Less than 0.005% of UK taxpayers are billionaires. They are rare even in the top 1%. The challenge is to find a fraction they will accept paying and that will work for the other 99.995% too.
Β£20,000,000 pa, per billion is pretty definitely paying their way in my mind.
I want to farm them for milk not beef.
Not a perfect analogy but it's brief.

I'm sure there must be a word to describe a short clear question or observation like yours that can't reasonably be answered in anything other than a long and complicated way.

20 of the EU27 members currently use the EURO? I would expect the UK to be asked to use the EURO.
For my part I hope the UK eventually will.
It's above our pay grade.
Today's #enshitification courtesy of the enhanced new Kia App for the car: "... detailed Driving Insights, the driver can additionally use connected car data to generate a driving safety score."
So they are selling my driving style to all and sundry, so they can game me silently. ;-(
Tragically many died in childbirth, one pregnancy too many etc etc. Nonetheless it's not the long ago. :-(

I agree let's rationalise it. I'm not so sure about the no good has come of privatisation. Without the experiment and experience we have little defence when other privatisations, like say health (the NHS) or education are under corporate greed attack.

If the UK was really, really smart, it would now plough tens of billions into research centres and take in all the American academics fleeing the US. Spoiler: the UK is not smart. π¬π§

There are ice shelves bigger than the UK.
We are however the only large island 20 something miles from its main markets and holiday destinations that has excluded itself, committing this much self harm.

By the 1930s, in the USA, census data indicates that about 10% of 17 year old girls were married, but younger marriages (e.g. at 12) weren't uncommon.
They just followed the lead of English Common Law. Many are alive today.
Society evolves, it grows, it changes, individuals less so. #JustSaying
I won't bore you with my sources because each time I investigate the shape of the analysis is the same if the exact numbers are not.
One side point at the few chancers arriving by boat and scream at the huge legal numbers which we collectively actually want. The other side is largely silent.
Why?
I used to think it was an IQ, EQ, GPA issue, because research shows those less blessed, don't follow the facts so well. BUT, although this may have an effect it isn't the correct story.
Until we understand how to help people navigate complex issues dispassionately, we are where we are. :-(
You and I have done this before.
The UK 'can' cherry pick. The issue is if they can get into the EU without 100% immediate compliance on such items.
I accept you believe not, I want to find out through the UK asking to rejoin and negotiating entry.
The EU doesn't exist in a vacuum.
1) Perceived fairness.
2) Idiots who set them off and walk on (common in my experience).
3) We have Zebra Crossing with belisha beacons that traffic should respect immediately. Sadly less are being built in my experience.
4) The new Highway Code rules H1 and H2 giving clear pedestrian supremacy.
Please note:
You can't 'reach net zero by 2050 or sooner' by exploiting the 'largest global oil and gas discovery in 25 years' and 'shift away from renewable energy to refocus on fossil fuels.'
Leon, we are going to miss Net Zero, IMHO, because it only takes one industrialised economy, who isn't trying, to frustrate everyone's efforts.
We are on a slower or a faster highway to hell but we are on a highway to hell.
Many will die, much wealth will be lost, much misery will ensue. :-(
The anti EU lobby will weaponise anything to keep the UK whole and out of the EU (or SM and to a lesser extent the CU).
I simply don't know how to counter, what I see, as the irrationality against Schengen.
Even without the EU, or SM or CU I'd be in favour of the free movement of people!
Yet, the truth is told by ~5%. Is it a failure to listen, to investigate, to challenge by the 95%? Is it a critical thinking failure?
I sent a recent analysis of mine to all my 'friends' to read. They read it, didn't object and then carried on regardless & very wrong.

I certainly don't want to be closer to Trump's USA and I'm prepared to pay a large penalty, if necessary, to keep it like that.
We need to bear in mind his acolyte and VP is J D Vance and he looks no different.
The USA need to reject their path completely and I don't see that happening soon.
If your only lens is personal autonomy or collective strength then you get polarised politics. Most humans lack the ability for nuance. Critical thinking is rare. Our political systems aren't designed to help us overcome our limitations either. We need to evolve.

Okay, what we don't know are what fraction of those arriving by small boat are legitimate asylum seekers and what fraction are just chancer economic refugees. We are told about 1/3rd ars not given refugee status.
So about 13,000 out of 779,000 are an obvious issue, the rest are not so much.
Which group should we refuse entry to?
The grand total adds over 1% to our population a year. So, we need a similar growth in housing, the NHS, legal aid, Policing, the Fire brigade, teachers, schools, social security, energy production, etc, etc.
