The US has a contract with the President of El Salvador to house these prisoners at $6M/year if memory serves. A commercial contract has nothing to do with citizenship or foreign custody. The prison is a vendor to the US Government.

It can be really hard to watch. Sorry you’re having to deal with this. My Dad was similar but we didn’t talk politics after I asked him “would he be proud of me if I talked and acted like Trump?” He had no reply; he couldn’t say ‘yes’ and wouldn’t say ‘no’.

On one level it’s sad to witness, but on another it’s likely necessary. Hopefully you’re open to reconciliation if he ever changes his mind. Estrangement can be hard on everyone involved to varying degrees.
