Oil prices wouldn't be all over the news today if more of our economy was powered by local, secure renewable energy.

This isn't an "energy crisis". It's a fossil fuel crisis.

44% of UK electricity came from renewables in 2025. More of that plus an electrified economy => no more oil shocks.

I get yelled at for saying this but for many hundreds of years people went to university not to get diplomas or be employable but because immersion in the humanities was considered foundational to a good life, and school must return to its original purpose: the joy of learning.

I know but other people might also be reading this who are being pulled in different directions by whatever circumstances so it's kind of for their benefit.
I always feel like it's important to restate this sort of stuff because some ppl might just be hearing it for the 1st time.

Importing talent and skills and diversity.
And yes, to some extent, some of what you call "importing cheap labour" is for seasonal / intermittent / transitional / insecure work for which we don't have enough 'homegrown' people.
All of this is a net benefit both to society and to the economy.

I've flashed a usb stick umpteen times in umpteen different ways trying to install Linux on my Surface book pro, changed the boot order, done special restarts and no matter what I do the @!*ing thing just keeps booting itself into windows.😡

... Well, not exactly Tron, that would take way more attention to detail than I'm capable of but exactly that effect.

I've been messing about with illumination ideas for the bike I'm going to use on the London Lockdown ride. This is el-wire, from last night. I'm quite liking it. Going to get some shorter bits and do the wheels too.

Fucking hell. I came back for another look.
No, you're blocked.
People like you also say things like "you can't make an omelette without breaking any eggs".

I'm vaguely disappointed but also watching the Rocketeer with my youngest so not getting embroiled. Earlier you agreed with me about 20mph speed limits and I respected you because you seemed to be aware of the danger caused by fast driving around people, so as the Americans say, "what gives?"

Well, after going back into the conversation, his last post from 20 minutes ago makes me take it all back.
You're right, he is. An ignoramus.

Does that actually happen though?

I'm sorry to hear about that, I can only imagine.
To be fair I think this person put themselves across badly originally, it turns out they do agree that 20 should be the limit in any sort of area where there are people around. They at least seem to be open to discussion as well.

Possibly. Probably my fault I saw your original message, thought (wrongly) typical bad driver and saw red a bit.

Slight risk of circular arguing here but if we were driving fast in a place where people are busy doing people stuff then we are at fault, irrespective of what the law says.

I can cope with late nights / early mornings as long as sofas aren't involved.
The moment 10pm comes and I sit down that's it. Zzzz.

I think that's the point. *We* all should be incredibly nervous about what we might do to someone at any given instant.

There's no precedent in human history or in nature for children (and people in general) to be separated from 3 tons of lethal metal by just a few cm of empty space. Trying to confine people to a tiny, often non existent pavement is unnatural and of course it should be on the driver to slow down

06.03.2026 17:02 — 👍 0    🔁 0    💬 0    📌 0

I hadn't suggested that, nevertheless is driving slower not a reasonable step?It should be nigh on impossible to hit someone in anything like a residential area.
I think presumed liability(in general) would make a massive diff.
(If someone steps into a busy A road or motorway, that's another thing)
