This is far from every vent I could post about 9-1-1, but I'm glad it resonated! (And of course I ship buddie, I am a woman of taste)

30.06.2025 12:30 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I'm emerging briefly from my social media hiatus to let you know that I guest wrote the June edition of @samlmontano.bsky.social's Disasterology newsletter. Given the state of the world and emergency management, I've chosen to write about an extremely timely and important topic: network drama "911".
30.06.2025 12:30 β π 9 π 2 π¬ 2 π 1Abstract: The identity and mission of emergency management is a topic of frequent discussion among researchers and practitioners. However, the extent to which there is consensus across emergency management agencies about what their missions are is unclear. This study seeks to answer that question through a content analysis of the mission statements from 226 emergency management agencies representing all levels of government in the United States (i.e. federal, state, territorial, tribal, and local). Mission statements are a tool organizations use to indicate both externally and internally their raison dβetre. This study found there is consensus regarding emergency management agenciesβ concern with βall-hazardsβ and the use of phases to organize their work. There were differences found in how agencies accounted for their constituencies, partner agencies, role identity, and goals. Despite some differences, this study found that overall agency mission statements across levels of government in the US align, suggesting consensus in the field of the mission of emergency management.
Absolutely insane time to post this but @amsavitt.bsky.social and I have a new article out in the Journal of Homeland Security and Emergency Management called "Defining Our Mission: A Content Analysis of U.S. Emergency Management Agency Mission Statements" #GreySky

Blue book cover that reads: Disasterology Dispatches from the frontlines of the climate crisis by Dr. Samantha Montano
~SOME NEWS~
My book Disasterology: Dispatches From The Frontlines of The Climate Crisis is being re-released in paperback on March 4th!
It'll be the same as the hardcover just with an additional chapter on "The Problem With Climate Havens".
You can pre-order here: www.disaster-ology.com
It is primarily focused on the US - there are certainly takeaways relevant for international events, but the focus of Samantha's research (and my own) is the US.
10.01.2025 18:57 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I see a lot of disaster policy hot takes in the wake of major events, and it makes me wish you all understood how the emergency management system actually works. This book is the best place to start.
10.01.2025 17:12 β π 9 π 2 π¬ 1 π 0If you have been watching recent disasters unfold and want to understand the basics of their social and political context, I can't recommend Disasterology by my friend and colleague @samlmontano.bsky.social enough. (And I know she won't promote it herself right now.)

05.01.2025 00:22 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I wish I were feeling better about 2025, but I'm going to keep doing my best to find joy, build community, and try to help people where I can.

In spite of The Horrors, 2024 was a pretty good year for me:
-We bought a house
-I'm helping lead a work project I'm incredibly proud of and passionate about
-I started boxing again
-I saw a lot of incredible shows/concerts that brought me a lot of joy
-I've made so many wonderful new friends
Tonight I asked my sister, who among people who are alive today do you think people will remember in 500 years? She said, "Who's our Shakespeare? Maybe Lena Dunham?"

I am very proud of this bathroom but I will never wallpaper again. (We also just finished tiling the floors - they were carpeted when we moved in π€’.)

25.12.2024 13:28 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0On eclipse day, we found sunscreen at my parents' house that expired before I was born.

22.12.2024 01:00 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I have nothing to contribute to the Die Hard Christmas Movie Discourse, but it is special to me because not only does it take place on my birthday, it literally takes place on the day I was born.

Small jar of wild blueberry maple syrup spread
Jamvent Day 7: Wild Blueberry - Maple Syrup Spread. This was good! I only ate about a third of it because I want to try it on the sourdough blueberry pancakes we have in the freezer. Reserving my rating for now.
08.12.2024 03:41 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Small jar, label reads "Bonne Maman, Rhubarb - Strawberry Spread"
Jamvent Day 6 (late nite edition): Rhubarb - Strawberry Spread. Meh. 3/5
07.12.2024 04:01 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Small jar of jam, label reads "Bonne Maman, Purple Fig - Cinnamon Spread Net Wt. 1 oz (28 g)", held in a hand
Jamvent Day 5: Purple Fig - Cinnamon Spread. Wow! A nearly perfect jam. Had an unpleasant sensory experience with a seed or something but the taste was phenomenal. Ate on a brioche bun from On the Rise. 4.75/5
05.12.2024 23:39 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Moskowitz's goal seems to be making FEMA a cabinet-level agency (he's the former emergency management director for Florida), and I agree that would be great, but boy, it can't be your only goal.
05.12.2024 17:14 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Small jar of jam. Label reads "Bonne Maman Orange - Yuzu - Grapefruit Spread Net Wt. 1 oz (28 g)." Held in a hand.
Jamvent Day 4: Orange-Yuzu-Grapefruit Spread. This was very close to being excellent! Wish it had been what it wanted to be: marmalade. I'm also not a huge citrus girly so take that under advisement. 3.5/5
04.12.2024 13:41 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0You will have to tell me what it's supposed to taste like.
04.12.2024 00:04 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Small jar of jam, label reads "Bonne Maman Apple - Quince - Honey Spread Net Wt. 1 oz (28 g)" held in a hand
Jamvent Day 3: Apple-Quince-Honey Spread. Ok, that's enough quince now, Bonne Maman. This is... fine. A little too sweet for me. The spread had chunks of apple, which honestly ruined the spreading experience. Ate this on toasted sourdough. 2/5
03.12.2024 14:28 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Small jar with jam and label that reads "Bonne Maman Guava Spread Net Wt. 1 oz (28g)" held in a hand
Jamvent Day 2: Guava spread. Another very strong spread! Gets a rating boost because it actually evokes fruit and not just "jam." Ate this one on sourdough bread from On the Rise. 4.5/5
