I'm emerging briefly from my social media hiatus to let you know that I guest wrote the June edition of @samlmontano.bsky.social's Disasterology newsletter. Given the state of the world and emergency management, I've chosen to write about an extremely timely and important topic: network drama "911".

Abstract: The identity and mission of emergency management is a topic of frequent discussion among researchers and practitioners. However, the extent to which there is consensus across emergency management agencies about what their missions are is unclear. This study seeks to answer that question through a content analysis of the mission statements from 226 emergency management agencies representing all levels of government in the United States (i.e. federal, state, territorial, tribal, and local). Mission statements are a tool organizations use to indicate both externally and internally their raison d’etre. This study found there is consensus regarding emergency management agencies’ concern with “all-hazards” and the use of phases to organize their work. There were differences found in how agencies accounted for their constituencies, partner agencies, role identity, and goals. Despite some differences, this study found that overall agency mission statements across levels of government in the US align, suggesting consensus in the field of the mission of emergency management.

My book Disasterology: Dispatches From The Frontlines of The Climate Crisis is being re-released in paperback on March 4th!

It'll be the same as the hardcover just with an additional chapter on "The Problem With Climate Havens".

It is primarily focused on the US - there are certainly takeaways relevant for international events, but the focus of Samantha's research (and my own) is the US.

I see a lot of disaster policy hot takes in the wake of major events, and it makes me wish you all understood how the emergency management system actually works. This book is the best place to start.

If you have been watching recent disasters unfold and want to understand the basics of their social and political context, I can't recommend Disasterology by my friend and colleague @samlmontano.bsky.social enough. (And I know she won't promote it herself right now.)

No one in my family knew who Charlie Kirk was so I showed them a photo of him and each one of them visibly recoiled.

I wish I were feeling better about 2025, but I'm going to keep doing my best to find joy, build community, and try to help people where I can.

In spite of The Horrors, 2024 was a pretty good year for me:

-We bought a house
-I'm helping lead a work project I'm incredibly proud of and passionate about
-I started boxing again
-I saw a lot of incredible shows/concerts that brought me a lot of joy
-I've made so many wonderful new friends

Tonight I asked my sister, who among people who are alive today do you think people will remember in 500 years? She said, "Who's our Shakespeare? Maybe Lena Dunham?"

Jamvent Day 7: Wild Blueberry - Maple Syrup Spread. This was good! I only ate about a third of it because I want to try it on the sourdough blueberry pancakes we have in the freezer. Reserving my rating for now.

Jamvent Day 5: Purple Fig - Cinnamon Spread. Wow! A nearly perfect jam. Had an unpleasant sensory experience with a seed or something but the taste was phenomenal. Ate on a brioche bun from On the Rise. 4.75/5

Moskowitz's goal seems to be making FEMA a cabinet-level agency (he's the former emergency management director for Florida), and I agree that would be great, but boy, it can't be your only goal.

Jamvent Day 4: Orange-Yuzu-Grapefruit Spread. This was very close to being excellent! Wish it had been what it wanted to be: marmalade. I'm also not a huge citrus girly so take that under advisement. 3.5/5

You will have to tell me what it's supposed to taste like.

Jamvent Day 3: Apple-Quince-Honey Spread. Ok, that's enough quince now, Bonne Maman. This is... fine. A little too sweet for me. The spread had chunks of apple, which honestly ruined the spreading experience. Ate this on toasted sourdough. 2/5

Jamvent Day 2: Guava spread. Another very strong spread! Gets a rating boost because it actually evokes fruit and not just "jam." Ate this one on sourdough bread from On the Rise. 4.5/5
