when we say "nothing about us without us" this is what we are saying

I remember being dragged out of my house by my stepfather, clinging to the doorway and screaming, because they had repainted the school and the smell overwhelmed my sensory processing disorder

even if I was able enough, I would never WANT to restrain anyone because as a nonspeaking child it was terrifying to have adults put their hands on me like that

I believe anyone who champions the physical restraint of disabled folks should experience it firsthand themselves

my employer might move me to a location that’s “less dangerous” because I can’t physically restrain folks in crisis, but in nine years I have never been hurt once, thanks to my de-escalation skills

I worry that this is just another manifestation of a growing carceral attitude toward the disabled
