This selection brings together medicinal plants, plant fibers, dye-producing species, fungi and mycelium specimens—interwoven into a unique, more-than-human ecosystem that challenges fixed distinctions between nature and culture.

First, we invite you to explore the Droguier through the lens of contemporary art and design, tracing how these disciplines engage with traditional plant knowledge—both as medicine and material.

These exhibitions will not showcase plants or plant-based objects as artifacts, but rather examine their role in the shifting frameworks that have defined herbaria-related narratives.

A series of thematic exhibitions will be held in the Droguier over the next year, situating its historic collection within a broader contemporary context.

As part of a new initiative, we seek to critically examine our complex histories, ensuring the preservation of the collective memory of these practices and emphasising the importance of acknowledging the intersectionality of natural heritage.

Part 1 | Traditional Knowledge

We approached the concept as time travel, taking the visitors on a journey through traditional knowledge from its ancestral roots towards its role in contemporary urban context.

But how can you provide a scientific reasoning on a series of artworks deeply inspired by traditional knowledge - knowing that the two have a rather complicated relationship?

Engaging a wide variety of visual cultures, Maravilla’s
work is autobiographical, referencing his unaccompanied, undocumented migration to the United States due to the Salvadoran Civil War.

We had the pleasure of working on three artworks by transdisciplinary artist Guadalupe Maravilla. Combining sculpture, painting, performative acts,
and installation, he grounds his transdisciplinary practice in activism and healing.

To emphasize the need for collaboration between arts and science, MO.CO. invited Montpellier’s diverse scientific community to contribute to this major exhibition with texts explaining the scientific context of the artworks, offering deeper insight into the subject matter. @umontpellier.bsky.social

“Sense Unknown” features over 100 works by 30 artists, offering a fluid journey through materials, experiments, and disciplines to test reality, while echoing Montpellier’s rich history in education, knowledge dissemination, and scientific research.

The results are striking:

Enter the recent study from our research group, #QualiSud CIRAD at the Faculté de Pharmacie Montpellier, that explored this idea by enriching cassava flour with 30% cassava leaves.

Meanwhile, cassava leaves, featured in beloved dishes like saka saka or pondu across Central Africa, are often overlooked as a nutritional powerhouse. These leaves are packed with protein, vitamins, and antioxidants, yet much of this potential goes untapped.
