Dang, this is the kind of in-depth worldbuilding I love to see. Thinking about energy transfer in food webs is the coolest.

Wow, I DO like comic books and want to think more seriously about the linguistics of them! I AM a social scientist who wants to know more about nation-building and language planning in fiction. I didn't ask for this article but I'm glad I found it!

Itโ€™s OK to Abandon* Projects - Fari RPGs I think many of us have the impression that once we start something, we HAVE to finish. Weโ€™ve all seen them, the memes of โ€œunfinished projectsโ€ haunting us and whatnot....

Love this blog post so much

Glad to see outer wilds getting some love. Disco Elysium is probably my #1, but Outer Wilds is not the sort of game I would thought I'd like, and then I absolutely adored it.

"We can't let too many immigrants in because it would strain our resources."
We live in a country where farmers are subsidized to DESTROY tons of food every year to keep the commodity costs higher. We throw out completely usable products every day.
Scarcity is a falsehood to keep the rich in power.

Don't know what exact use-case you're looking for, but you could maybe try cryptpad?

"Age verification" laws are actually "upload your ID or get your face scanned to access every website, ending anonymity and associating your identity with everything you do online" laws and if more people understood that they would not be down for this authoritarian nonsense

after days of grifters and con men at CES we stumbled upon the booth for VLC. they were all dressed as wizards and told us, "we have nothing to sell, we just decided to show up". i told them I'd been using their software to pirate media for 15 years and they said "keep doing that"

I will never forgive these people for what they have done to the computer, and neither should you. I have watched them take the things that made me human - social networking, digital communities, apps, and the connecting fabric of our digital lives - and turned them into devices of torture, profitable mechanisms of abuse, and find it disgusting how many reporters seem to believe it's their responsibility to thank them and explain why it's good this is happening to their readers.

A story in four panels. First panel, the brain saying "hey". Second panel, someone sleeping with eyes closed "shut up, I am sleeping". Third panel, brain saying "your study doesn't have a well-crafted research question". Fourth panel, the person remains awake with eyes well open.

I harp on this with my students and thesis advisees all the time, but you MUST have a well defined research question.

I feel like so often, the period after Augustus' rise to power is portrayed as a time of stability and peace for Rome, but it's interesting to see behind that facade and learn that there were nefarious machinations upholding that power structure.

When I was 5, I loved science, which I took to be planets and magnets and chemicals and shit.

Soon I realized science was a collective human activity, and these were just the objects of its attention.

Anyway, whenever I read an OpEd on how science isn't political, I think "Are you 5 years old?"
