Riding cabi home from the metro westbound on Braddock, had a line of cars stuck behind me who couldn’t pass because of oncoming traffic. They woulda been sailing by if there’d been Braddock bike lane

The past many years of elections have shown that Alexandrians want safe complete streets, and a built-out multimodal transportation networks. We continuously elect the candidates who run on supporting projects like this, including electing the most adamant safe streets advocate on council as Vice Mayor in 2024 and continuing that pattern this past Saturday. I admire those who will show up to speak in favor of safety tonight, but supporters shouldn't be expected to sit in a room for hours waiting to talk for 3 minutes. We showed our support repeatedly at the ballot box, and trust our representatives to vote for the safe streets they ran on.

Excerpt from my written comment to Traffic & Parking Board tonight:

At this point the Braddock question is about more than transportation, it’s also about how we do civic engagement.

If the Traffic & Parking Board or members or Council reward behavior like this, showing it works, you can bet we will see more of it in the future.

I-195 is the dividing line. Though I am a β€œpork roll” guy despite growing up in north Jersey because my mom is from Trenton!

The discourse around this has been so disappointing, though. Trading off very underused street parking is absolutely the right move. Cities around the region and country are making their roads safer by doing just that.

However my peak years were in the early 2010s, when road deaths reached their lowest level. Some drivers were texting, but smartphones and distracting in car entertainment systems had yet to come to the fore. You actually had to drive the car and pay attention.
