Was is it with people and setting deadlines in mid January? Does the Grinch run these HR departments?

Fun #linguistic fact for World Linguistics Day:
If North America had the same linguistic diversity as New Guinea weβd expect Indigenous Americans to speak ~28,000 languages.

Journalist challenge: Use βMachine Learningβ when you mean machine learning and βLLMβ when you mean LLM. Ditch βAIβ as a catch-all term, itβs not useful for readers and it helps companies trying to confuse the public by obscuring the roles played by different technologies. π§ͺ

I think we can keep two things in our minds simultaneously. Rejecting AI illustrations for a scientific magazine cover does not necessitate rejecting AI supported subtitles, image recognition etc.

If you're thinking of a career in #academia, in any field, you should take some time to learn about the practical landscape of it as a workplace. One way of doing that is to read survey reports of employee well-being etc, here is one of postdocs in @maxplanck.de

A sequence bottleneck for animal intelligence and language?
We discuss recent findings suggesting that non-human animals lack memory for stimulus sequences, and therefore do not represent the order of stimuli fβ¦
Sometimes scientific papers surprise you. Info on new papers will appear below :)
We have identified that non-hum animals struggle with remembering and using sequential information, in general. (See e.g. this TiCS paper and references therein: www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...) 1/n

For example, if you are estimating phylogenetic signal of binary data using Fritz & @andypurvisnhm.bsky.social D-estimate it is necessary that the data is not very skewed (for example, 1 tip in one state, 99 in another). Otherwise, the test doesn't work. More: hedvigsr.tumblr.com/post/7454773...

Highlighting a nice paper on interdisciplinary methods exchange. We should always scrutinise the assumptions of the methods, even internally within the same discipline.

My understanding is that this shift aligns with actions to solve another situation: that there were not enough starting positions for ECRs. Also, over the decades MPG spec seems to have pivoted to the "spring-board"-approach - institutes being exciting transitory places rather than destinations.

One of the issues you raise as a factor is the employment conditions, in MPG & academia broadly. I was intrigued to learn that MPG and German universities used to employ more people on tenure basis than they do now.
