Footer to my consultation response to a council that sees "active travel" as a mechanism for removing bikes off the road.

Three teenagers riding side by side, chatting and sharing gum because protected cycle tracks make this kind of freedom safe, normal and enables social life.

In 1981 there are cars parked to the right, leaving a narrow lane for cars and bikes. The footway on the other side has bollards to prevent pavement parking. Today there is no car parking, with the road wide enough for cars to use it for access in one direction and bikes to pass. The footway to the left has cycle parking and a loading bay on it. The road today is dominated by bikes, with very little motor traffic

My home town has its own workaround: narrow footpaths and tarmac over green verges to add discontinuous sections of bike lanes, so getting bikes off the road.
