Sad to hear of the death of Clem Sunter. A marvellous person, deeply loved SA, & educated us all. The worst dressed guest I ever had on 702 but amongst the very top in terms of quality. At Oxford he was in a band that shared top billing with the Rolling Stones. He was so proud of that!

Tony Ensor kindly brought an old jersey so I could keep mine and swap for an Aussie one. At FT I had the ball but wasn’t allowed to get it signed. I was told that would make me a professional!

Fifty years ago this month I made my debut for Ireland v Australia. I was twenty years and two months old. Scared stiff! Where does time go? I am now 70!

After the G20 clean up we were told that better service in JHB would continue.
Well, our recycling has not been picked up for two weeks. I called Pikitup to be told that bills haven’t been paid to fix trucks so the service has been suspended! It didn’t take long did it?
South African sports on fire! What a win in Calcutta by Themba’s men and the Boks still class. Bafana on the way up despite SAFA’s worst efforts. Ladies sport flying and our fans behaving and being sporting. Politicians take note of what can be done with integrity and hard work.

Yesterday my car broke down on Republic Rd. I called the AA. The call system took a few minutes but I finally got hold of Sipho. He told me I would be helped soon. Within 30mins Thomas arrived with a flat bed lorry and in no time we were home.
The service was magnificent! Many thanks AA.
He repeated stories, as do I, but each time they were just as funny. He was irreverent but also deeply religious. He loved India and Africa and cricket and friends.
His favourite toast? ‘To enduring friendship!’

Recently Jennie and I had lunch at 1920 and bumped into Dick Foxton. He looked very unwell but, as usual, was optimistic and full of fun. Now he is gone. He never forgot a birthday, got me Don Bradman's autograph, introduced us to amazing people and was never in a bad mood... 1/2

In Feb I posted that in Gqeberha after hiring a car at the airport, an attempt to hijack and scam us was made. The great news is that, thanks to cooperation from us, a community group and the police, arrests have been made and the perpetrators are in jail. It shows what can be done with cooperation.

Today I attended the funeral of the founder of 702, Issie Kirsh. It was packed. He was a hugely successful businessman and a visionary. However he remained humble to the end, a family man and a philanthropist.
